I knew we would win… I just didn’t want to jinx us.
So we’re off to an uncharacteristic good start. I thought we looked very solid against a Liverpool side bereft of any imagination. On paper at least, this was the trickiest of our opening encounters, so we really should be able to build on this result and have a nice stockpile of points come the end of August.
The back four looked very solid, with Corluka my stand out performer, despite Benoit’s brilliant goal. Bassong looked decent and made it a dream debut, by scoring the winner.
Palacios was immense in midfield and combined well with Huddlestone, who was ready to drop back and provide cover when Wilson went on one of his surging runs. Modric and Lennon were lively and will only get better.
I’ve mixed feelings on the Defoe and Keane front. On the one hand Keane’s presence did allow us to control possession, as was demonstrated by how difficult we found it to keep the ball when Crouch came on for him. I don’t think though that they combined particularly well and I hope that Harry doesn’t go with this pairing for our away trips to Hull and West Ham.
Most impressive was how we reacted when Gerrard equalised. Straight back down the other end and back in front within minutes. T’rrific.
Also to be commended are the White Hart Lane faithful. On a balmy afternoon, the atmosphere was absolutely cracking. Especially the chanting at Gerrard’s expense.
“You’re supposed to be in jail…”
“Self defense? You’re having a laugh…”
And they say that it’s the Scousers that have got the best developed sense of humour.
