Michael Dawson started the week being touted as the new Spurs captain, yet according to the back page of my Evening Standard, he’s now on his way to Sunderland who have tabled an £8m bid.

Even if they have put in an offer, it’s a non-story, because the transfer will never happen. Dawson has been in brilliant form in recent weeks, Bassong goes off to the African Nations Cup soon, while King and Woodgate are injured. So why would we risk selling the man who could well be our only available centre back come January?

Ah well, according to the Standard’s brand of warped logic, Redknapp wants to bring in another defender in the transfer window and has targeted Matthew Upson. Unfortunately, the Scrooge-like Daniel Levy has ordered that Harry must sell before he can buy and apparently no one wants to pay our asking price for either Pavlyuchenko or Bentley (the only plausible part of the Standard’s story).

So their logic is that we might let Dawson go and then use the funds to buy Upson. In which case we’ll have loads of defenders available in the new year and will suffer no selection problems… oh hang on, we’ve just sold Dawson haven’t we? So we’re still only left with one fit centre back and this one has to adapt to playing in new surroundings, while starting alongside either Corluka or Huddlestone.

Even under the best of circumstances, where everyone was fit and available, why would we want to swap Dawson for Upson? They’d cost roughly the same, only Upson is older, more injury-prone and not actually any better than Dawson.

The paper does speculate that Dawson is worried that he will lose his spot once Woodgate and King are fit, which is understandable. Making him captain would alleviate that problem, as it would more or less guarantee him a starting role and kill off silly transfer speculation like this.

He’s 26 years old now and is no longer the young apprentice. Is it time to put our faith in Michael Dawson?

  1. You don’t mind our great players being linked to other clubs but lets have a decent price tag this is taking the urine offering 8 million. The Standard fell out with Levy but how could he print this crap .If Toure and Lescott are worth what city payed then Daws is worth a lot more than 8 million more like 20 million and rising with every game he plays is edging him nearer SOUTH AFRICA.

  2. No substance to this story at all. Even if it were true, we would be mad to let Dawson go as he is looking the part more and more and with the added responsibility of wearing the armband he has looked like he is a natural leader. Give him the regular starting slot that his patience has deserved and let him keep the captaincy, with Ledley or Woody playing alongside him when fit!

  3. Daws should get an extended run in the side – he deserves it. Love his focus, energy and professionalism. Let Woody and King EARN their recalls when they’re fit. There’s a lot to be said for a settled centre back partnership.

By the way Dan, this is the first time on your blog. The presentation is great – nice clean layout and big readable text. Great stuff!

  4. Dawson is a leader who leads by example, and as long as his with us he should always be our captain, and in front of woody and ledders. upson for me cannot lace dawsons boots and is better than lescot.

  5. TOTAL NON STARTER, DAWS IS NOT THAT FAR INTO A NEW CONTRACT AND NOW PLAYING REGULARLY SO WHY WOULD HE WANT TO LEAVE. I DONT THINK REDKNAPP WOULD GIVE THE ARM BAND TO SOMEONE HE WAS GOING TO SELL AND HAVE TO START WITH ANOTHER NEW CAPTAIN WHEN HE LEAVES, ESPECIALLY AS KEANE ISNT GUARANTEED A STARTING SLOT. FORM COUNTS FOR A LOT IN REDKNAPPS EYES AS WE SEE WITH KEANO AND DAWS IS PLAYING THE BEST FOOTBALL OF HIS CAREER AND REALLY SHINING AS CAPTAIN AND COULD TURN INTO THE ALL ACTION DEFENDER WE HAVE BEEN LACKING SINCE THE ONE AND ONLY GRAHAM ROBERTS. JUST WISH ALL THIS TRANSFER SPECULATION WAS ABOUT THAT USELESS TWAT JENAS, CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHAT HE ACTUALLY DOES ?
DAWS IS A LEGEND IN THE MAKING

  6. if this transfer actually happens we would be taking a step backwards as i think daws is one of the best defenders in the country atm and is much better then upson. DONT SELL HIM HARRY. And i would be delighted if he was made club captain instead of robbie keane. Daws for WC squad!!!!!!

  7. I wont disagree with what the Evening Standard have written as I suppose to all intents and purpose it could in fact be true,

Yet,I will without any shadow of doubt stand in the corner of those who believe it to be a non starter,

Also if Steve Bruce has been a little cheeky you can’t really blame him,as he strives to develop his club, and perhaps in all honesty we should do a little of the same and try for some regular big name starters rather than ones though good footballers in their given right, alas have now found themselves frozen out of their present teams,I,E two keepers recently on trial at The Lane,

One more thing in case you were unaware Sebastien Bassong has been left out of the Cameroon squad for the forthcoming African Cup of Nations, yes I do feel sorry for him, though it’s definitely a boon for Spurs in their current predicament regarding central defenders, plus he’s still young so their will be many more chances for him.
