There’s no way round it. We have a shocking record at Anfield, winning just 7 times from our many trips to Liverpool.

Even allowing for the fact that Liverpool dominated English football for so long, this is a pathetic statistic. Don’t forget that we were a pretty tidy outfit in the sixties. We really should have a few more wins under our belts.

On Wednesday night Spurs have a very realistic chance of leaving Liverpool with a win and adding to our total of victories. We’ve beat them already on the opening day of the season, our away record this term has been very good and they are without Torres and Gerrard.

To give some inspiration to our lads, I’ve delved into the history books (and believe me I had to really delve) to look back at our 7 wins at Anfield. This is how it’s done boys…

7. 1998 – League Cup Fourth Round – Liverpool 1 Tottenham Hotspur 3

Spurs last win at Anfield came en-route to the Worthington Cup victory over Leicester. Spurs take an early lead through Iversen, before Liverpool old boy John Scales made it 2-0. Allan Nielsen scored the third in the second half, with Liverpool replying through Michael Owen.

6. 1995 – FA Cup Quarter Final – Liverpool 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2

Robbie Fowler gave Liverpool the lead in this one, but Spurs hit back to grab victory. First, Sheringham equalised on the stroke of half time with a brilliant curling shot, before setting up Klinsmann to score the winner in the dying seconds.

5. 1993 – Premier League – Liverpool 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2

Our last league win came some seventeen years ago, as Spurs caught Liverpool cold in August. The current Derby boss Nigel Clough scored for the Reds, with Sheringham notching a brace in reply.

4. 1986 – Division 1 – Liverpool 0 Tottenham Hotspur 1

This takes me back. Clive Allen scored the deciding goal, in a season where he bagged 49 in total. We did the double over Liverpool that season, with the 1-0 home win being the first match that I attended at White Hart Lane.

3. 1985 – Division 1 – Liverpool 0 Tottenham Hotspur 1

A total of 73 years had passed without Spurs winning at Anfield, until this day. Tottenham went into the game having lost just once in 15 games and recorded victory thanks to a 70th minute goal from Garth Crooks.

2. 1912 – Division 1 – Liverpool 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2

Ernie Newman and Tom Mason scored the goals for Spurs, not suspecting that this would be the last Tottenham win at Anfield for several decades.

Tottenham’s first win at Anfield was secured after goals by Billy Minter and some bloke called Humphries. Sadly no YouTube footage still exists.
