According to some reports, Tottenham have agreed a deal in principle to sign the Galatasaray winger Arda Turan, with Giovanni Dos Santos going the other way.

Turan is a left winger who has been compared to Lionel Messi and at 23-years old, has already won 34 caps for Turkey. He’s also Galatasaray’s captain, which suggests that he might be the sort of vocal character that Harry is always stressing we need (or that Galatasaray will do anything to keep him).

For a player of such repute I’ve got my doubts as to whether the reported fee of 5m euros plus Dos Santos would be enough. We paid £4.7m for the Mexican forward two seasons ago and you would hardly think that his value would have increased in that period. So I’d expect we’d have to pay at least double what has been reported, with Dos Santos as the makeweight.

Do we really need to shell out that sort of dosh for someone that plays in a position where we’re pretty well stocked? I think that Redknapp sees Bale as an attacking full back long term, while Modric and Kranjcar might play more centrally should we switch to a 4-3-3, so perhaps signing Turan would make sense. It would be a bit of a kick in the teeth for Danny Rose though.

Harry has talked about our need for ‘special’ players that could lift us to another level. These highlights videos don’t tell the full story of a player, but they do suggest that Turan possesses the sort of skill that would put him into that sort of category.

The verdict: On the face of it another left midfielder doesn’t seem like a priority, but you just know that if we did sign Turan, we’d all wet our pants at the thought of watching him at White Hart Lane next season. Considering that Dos Santos has hardly featured for us since he’s been at Tottenham, then perhaps we should take a chance on this deal.

  1. He looks like a master of the football.
Regardless of position I think we should always look to bring the best possible footballers to the club.
He’s clearly not just a left winger and could play anywhere across midfield. Many of the home games against teams who just defend I feel require someone like this to produce the magic instead of say a Palacios type.
Competition is always necessary and if we add quality to our current quality it could be the catalyst which takes us to the NEXT level. Now is the time to capitalise on breaking into the top four and whilst we have many good players there are some that aren’t up to that task of taking us further and so Turan would be welcomed by me to the Lane.

  2. It’s great to be linked with such well established players,we also seem to be intrested in David Villa although if Harry has convinced Daniel that we need to spend big then I’d much rather have Aguero.

  3. In these days of £30m players, then surely this could be seen as a bit of good business? Gio is obviously not fancied by Harry and if Turan does prove to be the bees knees then we are in a win win situation.

Sell on value could be great or he could do the business at WHL for years.

  4. Hello, this guy is the real deal.
I have been watching him on and off for the last 3 years has the skill of ronaldo and passion like Roy keane,
I would like to see him Joe cole Mich richards.
But bale LB, then arda on the left lennon right, that would be as good as ribery and robben for me.
    PLEASE SIGHN HIM

  5. i’m kind of getting sick of people saying ‘where would he fit in?’ its not just about the first XI anymore, we need quality in depth (and i don’t mean jenas and players like that) i mean real quality like turan, dzeko, cavani, kjaer so we can actually compete in the champions league and maintain a push for 4th in the league.

  6. Do everything to get this guy. He is as good as Fabergas and not a Gooner! Add Dzeko and we have a team that will compete for the title next year!! COYS!

  7. He is the ‘ Beez kneez ‘. if we do get him, then we could be heading for the top end of the game…I know Ill just climb back down for a minute, it’s just that he is like Bale and Lennon but more cultured on the ball. ( Happy days )
    COYS

  8. Harry wouldn’t be looking at a right footer to play on the left. I think turan, as being one of the biggest known euro starlets, would easily start costing 15mil plus a dos santos. I imagine if this is a rumour with legs harry may be looking for a player who can run in through midfield holes with modric and a holding mid, perhaps explaining the dzeko rumours to have a lone upfront in certain games. If either one of these appear at the club I’d expect to say bye bye to both keano and pav.
Romelu lulaku would be another lone man possibility, and if he’s 16, then so am I! (but v. Unlikely)

  9. Actually I can see a lot of similarities with the Modric deal.
A player who is far from unknown in footballing circles, but plying his trade in his home league. A player who could take Spurs up a level, but still have a good sell on value. He is even pretty close in age to that of Modric when signed.
Another similarity would be that, if there is any truth to this rumour, Dan Levy has got in early.
And don’t foget, ‘Arry said he wants his business done before the World Cup.

Would fit into the squad (SQUAD) nicely.

  10. I am a supporter of Fenerbahce (Arda’s rival team) and I am a big fan of him. I watch him nearly every week in the turkish and he is nearly always the best player on the pitch. Also for Turkey he was outstanding in Euro 2008. they made it to the semi finals but got beaten 3-2 by Germany 🙁

  11. Arda Turan… Messi of Turkey. I am a GALATASARAY fan and don’t want to loose such a perfect captain .
For me 5 x Dos Santos’ can’t stand in for ARDA.
We don’t want him to leave but it’s his decision.
İf you get him, you’ ll be enjoyed of his show…

    EMPİRE : GALATASARAY
    KİNG : ARDA TURAN
