Martin O’Neill has walked out on Aston Villa just days before the season starts and there is speculation that his decision was prompted by a row over the future of Ashley Young.

There’s some logic to this. O’Neill has known about James Milner wanting out for months now, so you wouldn’t think that his sale would prompt the Villa manager to walk. I suppose there could have been a row over the size of the fee accepted by Villa, or the amount of that money available to O’Neill for transfers, but again, the Milner to City deal has been talked about for such a long time that you wonder what could possibly upset O’Neill sufficiently for him to do something like this.

That said, with Villa playing hardball with Manchester City over Milner, why would they accept a bid from us for Young, unless it was for a similarly exorbitant fee? There’s been talk of a swap deal involving the likes of Jenas, Keane and Bentley going to Villa, but what chairman would agree a deal like this over his manager’s head? It would have to be cold, hard cash.

I don’t believe that we are potless as Harry has indicated, but I find it equally hard to think that we’d pay megabucks for Young when a striker seems more of a priority.

It’s all quite puzzling and guaranteed to get the message boards buzzing. Do you think Young will join and if so, do you want him at White Hart Lane? Regardless of my misgivings over the possible fee, I think that Young on one wing and Lennon on the other would be a frightening proposition for opposition defenders next season.

The one positive from all of this which is surely definite, is the fact that it will be very hard now for Villa to compete within the top six, as they have done in recent seasons. The downside is that their new manager probably won’t have any interest in signing Jenas and Keane.

  1. I think lennon on one wing and Bale on the other would be a frightening prospect for opponents. Spurs don’t need Young now – a few years back I thought he was just what they needed.

    • Sounds a frightening prospect as we will stretch teams, but with two players who like to play wide I can see us getting run through in midfield.
Unless we’re looking to play 1 up fromt

  2. I heard he resigned bcos he was caught in his car at Villa Park with Monika Mint, apparently she had lost a polo and was looking for it under O’Neil’s seat when they got interrupted..oh and as for Ashley Young? I can’t see what all the fuss is about, he looks very ordinary to me.

  3. It makes sense if you take into account our pursuit of Joe Cole but refusing to pay above the odds. The package Cole receive from Liverpool is about 15mil pounds over 3 years. Levy has it all work out, 20mil for Young is better value (excluding his salary).

      • I guess because Cole would have no resale value at 32 whereas Young could be sold for around the same fee at 26/27. If he proved to be a success and not another Bentley of course…

  4. Depends who they get in. If they were to appoint Martin Jol, the Keane and Jenas moves would be back on. Wouoldn’t mind Keane being given another chance though. He’s looked one of our better players in preseason and took his goals well against the Viola.

    • how can you be willing to give keane another chance but not jenas? hes looked impressive in pre season aswell. keane looked awful the first few games in pre season and has popped up for goals.. and yh awful news about martin o’neil.. seemed the only person who would take keano.

      • Because Jenas has become a very ordinary player. He hardly played last season and doesn’t look to have any chance of dislodging Huddlestone, Modric, Kranjcar or Palacios. With the arrival of Sandro he wouldn’t get a look in. O’Hara coming back from injury is a better option; especially defensively.

As for Young, I would welcome it. To be good you need quality at every position, you need players challenging each other. If Bale or Lennon were to go down for any extended period of time then Spurs become a very slow team. It would also allow ‘Arry to rotate players or just rest them. Palacios played too much and his form dipped towards the end of the season. Sandro should spell him and hopefully O’Hara can offer something upon his return.

  5. ONLY LAST NIGHT THERE WERE VILLA FANS ON WEB SITES GIVING IT LARGE ABOUT ITKS WHO HAD ASSURANCES FROM YOUNG ABOUT BEING AN ARSENAL FAN AND NOT JOINING SPURS EVER.I POINTED OUT TO THEM A YANK OWNER WILL DO WHAT HE WANTS AND DOES,NT GIVE A TOSS ABOUT THE FANS.IT MAY NOT BE A DONE DEAL BUT IT IS STARTING TO SMELL FISHY AND VILLA FANS WILL START TO GET TWITCHY RINGS THIS CLOSE TO THE SEASON STARTING.AS MUCH AS IT PAINS ME TO SAY I THINK VILLA PLAY WET SPAM FIRST GAME AND THE POINTS ARE GOING TO AVRAM THE YIDDO.

    • its on ashley youngs twitter that hes supported arsenal since he was 8yrs old.. i obviously dont have a clue if its his actual twitter and he also goes on to say me and milner are leaving.. MON is a twat who made us play when injured.. and hes glad hes left.. so i have no idea how true it all is.

      • What does supporting a team as a boy mean? Gareth Barry and Scott Parker were Spurs fans growing up, it doesn’t anything. Robbie Fowler grew up an Everton fan, did that stop him at Liverpool. Football is football and money and notoriety is notoriety.

  6. I think Gio will be a fixture at Spurs this season, and that he will take the place of Bentley in the squad. That gives us some great permutations out wide with Lennon, Bale, Gio and Young, bringing great pace and speed to the team, and giving the shits to opposing full backs, who might have to defend against two or three of them in a match.

  7. Ashley young supports celtic. Said so himself on Football Focus, and I remember it well because I thought it was a bit strange at the time. So that’s pure Shi*e about supporting Arsenal

    • Are u retarded.he is an Arsenal fan.He talked about wright being his favourite player when he started to support Arsenal as a kid.

I didnt know the hate ran so deep that you would actually resort to lies such as young supporting celtic looooool

BTW both of his yonuger brothers play for arsenal academy

  8. Doubt that Twitter is genuine if he says on there he is leaving and is glad MON is gone!!!

All we need is Samuel Eto’o – let’s blow all are money on him; £30m should do it

  9. Mal wouldn’t forget that either as that would be odd to say Celtic!! Maybe his agent told him to say that so not to be controversial.

Don’t think we really need him but would be a good statement of intent.

I’d take him over getting no one that’s for sure particualry if play one up at times this season!!

  10. I think this is a good decision by O’Neill. Everton had big injuries last year and he can’t compete with Tottenham, City Liverpool and the top 3 from last season. He’s walking away from a club that is likely to drop places and struggle to make a challenge for a european place, never mind a top 4 place. If he leaves now, he walks away with his reputation and the next manager will struggle to maintain the clubs league position. A good move from O’neill

  11. Gio will play behind the striker like he does for Mexico, young on the left, modric huddlestone/palacios, Lennon midfield. Nice!

  12. This thing about Young being an Arsenal supporter is bollocks

What player in there right mind would support Arsenal….
there best player and captain doen’t want to be there, havn’t won fuck all for 6 six years and going backwards.

Utter utter bollocks… he as with his dad has always been a SPURS fan

    • “he as with his dad has always been a SPURS fan”

      ahahahahahahahhahahahahahaaahaahhahahahahhahahhaahahahahaahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaahahahahhahahahhahahahahahahahahaahahhahahahahhahah

It hurts doesnt it.you lot crack me up.Young is a lifelong gooner along with his two younger brothers who PLAY for the arsenal academy.

“What player in there right mind would support Arsenal….” defoe, king, lennon, rose, assoue ekotto,O’Hara

and ooh almost forgot Harry Redknapp…

      • Ashley Young has two brothers one older and one younger… and only one is a professional footballer who plays for burton albion

typical thick gooner just making some Bulls**t up

  13. Are you saying O’Hara is a Gooner? If so you are wrong, he started at Arsenal but has always been a yid.

Anyway I think adding Ashley Young could have a detrimental affect on the team spirit that Harry has built since he has been there. AY attitude on the pitch is questionable at best, although I do recognise that he is a talented young man.

  14. think some of you may be missing a point! i get the feeling that IF young were to come to us that he wouldnt be to accompany lennon he would be above him in the pecking order if not a replaecment.i think harry has decided that lennons final ball isnt good enough even if itt has improved.if we had bales quality left why do we need another winger??? feel sorry for azza but you have to get better quicker in the top of the game

  15. Young is a good player who would provide options and I wouldn’t sniff if we got him but he is hardly a vital acquisition for Spurs right now.

  16. hi all is any other spurs fans getting sick of reading everyday that we are buying ever tom dick an harry. buy ashley good cb an striker. sell jenas crouch hutton should be bout there then
