Try as anyone might, it’s impossible to keep ‘the stadium’ out of the news at the moment. Last week there were many dissenting voices over Spurs’ plans for Stratford most notably Tottenham’s MP David Lammy and UK athletics chief Ed Warner who was distinctly unimpressed by the club’s proposals to abandon the running track and remove all trace of athletics from the stadium.
Talks have been going on and on and on this week with the usual lack of any real development. The latest to add his voice to the disquiet is former London Mayor Ken Livingstone who is concerned about the carbon footprint cost of effectively demolishing one stadium and building another.
‘Red’ Ken states: “I would be horrified at the thought, if Tottenham get it, that you demolish a stadium we’ve just spent £400million building – and then build a new one, because the carbon cost of a stadium is horrendous.”
After rejecting West Ham’s bid in 2006, Livingstone seems to have warmed to the idea adding: “If they decide to go for West Ham, then you have football and athletics there, that’s fine.”
Many prominent names are joining the Hammers’ camp but whether this will mean anything at the end of the day is questionable.
One actual development concerns Crystal Palace and the suggestion that they may plan to move to the national athletics stadium, a venue that Spurs propose to redevelop as part of their plans. A football club in there may hamper those already unpopular plans and Palace co-chairman Steve Parish will be making a statement on the club’s intentions tomorrow.
One thing is for sure that if this continues until 2012 it will become even more tedious to read and to write about. We can only hope to see some action and decisions soon.
As far as I’m concerned Livingstone & Lammy are a right win double. I worked under Livingstone at the G.L.C. In my opinion he is now, what he was then, a self serving nasty piece of work. Lammy seems to be jumping on the bandwagon, after all, any publicity is good publicity. Perhaps it’s a case of them being ill informed. I would suggest gentlemen that you find out just how much of the original stadium will be left if West Ham’s bid is accepted.
Looking ominous for the Stratford bid. I just hope it was all a ploy to get Haringey to play ball – “Well stick your borough, we’ll go and play somewhere else – someone who appreciates our money and work in the community!” Can’t see how developing the Crystal Palace stadium a bit is going to leave anywhere near what you would call a “legacy”. The olympics will come and go, and London would end up still without an Athletics venue capable of staging major tournaments as Crystal Palace is not set up for it. The track HAS to remain in Stratford.
Has everybody completely forgotten the statements made regarding this being a ‘contingency’ plan for Tottenham?

people who are backing the west ham plan have no power behind the decision, like Livingston & Coe. The spurs option has AEG & Qatar behind it, money talks !. Word has it spurs will win this bid, that will certainly stir things up but im all for it.
Levy’s PR machine is working very well! trying to make it look like its Haringey Council’s fault, but the 106 doc only requires enic to pay £16m which is not much also the council granted planning within 2years which is quick for the size of the development.

It simply cannot happen. The public money was used to create an Athletics venue that can hold big Athletic events. West Ham’s bid fulfils that 100%, whilst serving their own needs. Our bid returns London’s track to Crystal Palace which is not set up for large events and 100% serves our needs, but only slightly serves Athletics’ needs… It would be embarrassing for them to choose Spurs… However it was also embarrassing for Fifa to choose Russia & Qatar for the world cup bids…
i would like to know the amount of money Haringey Council are going to invest ,and what they are going to do to improve the high road and help thfc build this new ground ,i know thfc have to spend around 400 mill ?

When you do a vote, the dissenters vote. You would be amazed at how many fans want to move to Stratford. Why? Because it would turn Tottenham into the biggest club in London able to compete with every club in Europe. If we want to remain in Tottenham we would effectively be a big West Ham. The area is awful (I lived there for too long!); the communications are dreadful; the cost is prohibitive; the council are unsupportive – amazing how they are supporting us ONLY when we decided that we were going to move. Football has moved on dramatically. Liverpool are dying because they are stuck in a little stadium in a run down part of Liverpool.
The great Tottenham Hotspur cannot stand still. I have been marching down that High Road for 40 years. I have watched Arsenal go past us and I have watched a rich bloke buy Chelsea (and hopefully leave them in the lurch soon). I want my club to be self sufficient in an affordable stadium. Make no mistake, if we don’t move to Stratford we will not rebuild WHL – we will not get the support or the funding. This is the only option.
As for this athletics stuff – it is nonsense. We have never needed an athletics stadium. It is a minority sport. Why are we getting up in arms about one stadium in London that is not accessible for most of the country. Fund smaller stadiums and facilities all around the country, if necessary. Re-building Crystal Palace is ample. We haven’t had the World Cup in England since 1966. We have the Olympics in 2012 – then what? We won’t get it again for 50 years so why are we worrying about an athletics stadium?
Move on, progress. Maintain a focus in Tottenham with our massive community scheme and other incentives, but move to Stratford or forever be in Arsenal’s shadow. We are almost there, don’t blow it now.
