Benoit Assou-Ekotto joined the 100 club on Tuesday night, as he completed a century of appearances for Spurs in the Premier League. Not bad for a man who, at one point, looked like having as much impact as someone who joined around the same time, Dorian Dervitte.
Assou-Ekotto, a dream for shirt sellers who charge for printing by the letter, arrived from RC Lens in 2006 and made his way straight into the first team. After injury restricted him to just two appearances in 2007-8 however, he looked to be on his way out of the club.
Benny’s change of fortunes at Spurs came with the arrival of Harry Redknapp in October 2008. Harry seemed to like the look of BAE from day one and he has pretty much been first choice ever since – keeping Gareth Bale out of the side at one point until it looked like Bale might be on his way out of the club. In that time, he’s also won 15 caps for Cameroon.
So what’s the verdict on BAE? Does he deserve another 100 or should we be putting a left back on our shopping list this summer?
Hope not, he’s a f**king liability. And don’t people start saying to me, “Oh, but on his day there’s no better”, or “Everybody makes mistakes”, because that simply won’t wash anymore. Total liability, thinks he’s a winger.
BUT……….. on his day there’s no better.
also, everybody makes mistakes
Including King, Woodgate, Bassong, Dawson, Gallas, Hutton, Corluka.
stop hating just cos ur jealous of his hair n start getting behind the team!
COYS
I like Assou-Ekotto, however there is the aspect of his nonchalance that needs to be improved. He is too casual at times with his approach, if he improves that – I deem it nonchalance – then he’ll be a great defender.
i’ve never really like BAE yet he’s on of the first on the Team sheet. we need a new left back to take over. not good enough defensively. he proved that against blackpool… But lets not get started on that subject…

he’s got good technique and links up very well with Bale. He is also our best left back and one of the better ones in the premiership. and better than anyone we’ve had in that position for a very very long time. Remember when we stuck Alan Nielsen in there and got slaughtered by Everton? We followed that by signing Edman,Ziegler,Atouba none of which were that good and way behind BAE so unless someone world class came along I would not even consider making replacing him a priority as we’ll end up with no better. However we are in need of cover as when he’s injured or on afrian cup duty we’ll put someone out of position at lb. Bale I don’t think will ever be a LB again, he has become too damaging at left wing and was never a great LB anyway.
The best we’ve had in a while? Is that saying much?
agreed, it’s not saying much, but it does show that a very good left back is hard to find. I can’t even think who our last left back that was clearly better than BAE was, which tells me it would be better to focus on other areas of the team for now…
i cant believe harrys not picked up on how bad BAE is!!!! i agree with you malspurs he is a liability! He cannot defend, gets caught ball watching far too much.he was at fault for 2nd and 3rd goals v blackpool.its no coinsidence that he has been publicly slated by ex pros and i think he is a very lucky player!!! get rid of him Harry!!!!
BAE is an excellent player. Bale wouldn’t have been what he is today if it weren’t for BAE (and many more of course)! Yes, he makes mistake, but who doesn’t. Yes, he considers football work, which it is for him and everyone else who earns money from it. Personally, I would like to see him on the left wing some time. I hope for another century, no doubt!!
LMAO.

As for liabilities…there is no player that does make mistakes not just in our team but also other teams as well. how many wayward passes does palacios spray about? how many times does dawson slip up? how many times does bassong seem to lack concentration? how many times has gomes flapped and cost us? how many times did our strikers fluff their lines against blackpool? how many poor crosses has lennon put in? no, give BAE credit, he’s done well and is a pretty tidy player, never hoofs it and keeps his cool, Harry knows what he’s doing better than us.
Oh My! How can anyone call Benny a liability? Obviously, not seeing the full picture! On his last game (Blackpool), did anyone notice what he did? He was Left back, central defence, right back, left midfield, left wing, and later, right midfield! Nobody covered more grass than he did. He did a great job, and I don’t blame him if at close to the end of the match, he was tired out! The guy played with his heart. More than can be said about Pinaar, JD or Daws who is having a mare lately!
BAE is a very gifted footballer who is an asset to this spurs side.
He is prone to the odd lapse but the left back position is one were everyone can blatantly see every mistake while missing out on al your good work.
The guy is also one of the most endearing footballers around if you actually read the articles and interviews with him that others have used to brow beat him.
He loves football, but he says it is his career and he must work professionally at it. The quote about it being his job is based around saying if he was playing for the love of it he would still be playing with his friends at home in France in a park.
Check out the car he drives. Numbnuts like O’Hara bigging it up in Bentleys while he drives a smartcar and does loads of work with London kids charities and in Cameroon and France.
I have nothing but respect for him and have to say some of the hairdo’s are brilliant too.
Don’t just jump on the bandwagons watch him play and learn for yourselves about him.

Ok, but just have to mention, prior to Blackpool, where maybe the “Whole” team we’re pants, he did alright against “AC Milan”?

Have to agree, please fella’s give the guy some slack……. he’s either no worse or better than what we currently got on their day? And with all his faults (Show me the complete player ~ who produces every match & i’ll walk down WHL in an Arse-Anal Shirt), he’s still been one of our most consistance players over the last 2 seasons, who have helped us get to where we are now…… IMO anyway
BAE is a gifted footballer.
Last season his defending Was poor, and during the world cup He Was terrible. Never close to the winger and always letting Them swing the ball into the box.
At That Stage i never thought we would see him in a Spurs shirt again.
But he has truly improved.
Now he always puts preassure on the winger and doesn’t give them space.
Go through the goals we have conseeded this season. I don’t think you’ll find many scored because of BAE’s mistakes.
He’s excellent with the ball and despite his arrogant style of play, he tends to get away with it, and I enjoy watching him play.
I would have liked to see him come forward more often. More crosses into the box, and better quality on the crosses.
If that can be improved then I’ll give him another 300 matches.
BAE is to bale as berbativ was to keane. They work well and it should not be disrupted. Players make up a team. If it ain’t broke….
I think he’s improved and keeping his cool – some deem it nonchalence, but couldn’t it be self-confidence? – is important for the defence: we don’t need to boot balls high up the field and gift it back to the opposite side. He helps pass it and is confident dribbling upfield. Give him a break; he’s done well. Can’t say the same for Defoe, don’t think he could get into Blackpool’s strike force at the moment.
i watch BAE every week and i can tell you he is becoming more and more reliable to a point which i think he is one of the most consistent performer’s in the tottenham team if not in the premier league
BAE was poor against blackpool and over a season i would have him in my team. BUT remember we lost to Blackpool because our strikers are shit. Case closed. Don’t chase ghosts on that one.
It’s all very well saying BAE’s a liability but who do you replace him with? In my opinion he’s one of the best left backs in the league…. only really Evra, Cole and maybe Leighton Baines stand out as being better than him. Left back has been a problem position for us for 15 years. I wish he made fewer errors but I’d say that about Dawson, Gomes and Hutton/Corluka as well.
