An extra defender in the White Hart Lane ranks is as much as a priority for Spurs as a new front man and there are several reports today linking us once again with a move for Birmingham City’s Roger Johnson. While Birmingham announced a major squad clear-out yesterday, Johnson is one that Alex McLeish will want to keep hold of.

Spurs certainly have ‘previous’ when it comes to taking their pick from relegated sides and while the press awaits any moves for West Ham surplus, Johnson could be a bigger priority.

Now 28, Johnson was one of football’s journeymen having previously played for Wycombe and Cardiff City before Birmingham took a chance on him. He has established his premiership credentials in the two years that followed in which time he has remained largely injury free – another plus for Harry Redknapp.

Fans at St Andrews won’t want to see him go but a quick move back to the Premiership with Spurs could be much too tempting for the player. Is he of the quality required though?

  1. nobody thought Gallas was the answer until he proved he was still a top player… so until Johnson signs, then who knows!!!

  2. Maybe he’ll be a revelation but somehow I don’t think Harry has quite got the hang if managing a club who want to be in the Champions League, especially when it comes to the players we need.

  3. I agree with Iain. Arry seems to think getting a Top 5 squad into the CL for the first time in our history and still winning nothing should be the height of our ambitions. It is one of the reasons why I really he cops the England job and our next coach is a ‘winner’ cause with 1 trophy to show for 28 years of management Arry is not a winner.

  4. And who are you Iain, the authority on good managers?

As a Spurs fan you should know better. We are linked with anyone and everyone when it comes to the transfer window. Give Harry a break!

  5. I think Cahill from Bolton, and Zigic from Birmingham are must haves. Off load crouch and Defoe and give Pav a good run of games. Maybe add a right sided midfielder as cover for Lennon( Ashley Young?) and a Second Striker (Darren Bent anyone?) and we are sorted! I think Gomes is still a good keeper. and every other posistion has strength in depth! not to much need to tinker with the squad, it just needs trimming.

    • no offense Rudy 63, but i disagree with everything you just said… Although it would be neat to see Zigic and Crouch play up front together with Bale and Lennon spewing in the crosses.

  6. I’m not convinced he’s “the answer” as he probably wouldn’t oust Gallas or Dawson from a starting position.

He could be a good squad addition for defensive cover though, especially if King and Woodgate aren’t going to be about.

I would rather concentrate on our goalkeeping situation and problems at the other end of the pitch to be honest.

  7. HARRY NEEDS TO COME CLEAN AND LET THE FANS KNOW IF HE IS GOING OR STAYING, THE TALK IS ENGLAND ENGLAND ENGLAND! NOW ITS CHELSEA CHELSEA CHELSEA! WHAT USE IS IT IF HARRY PICKS THE PLAYERS HE WANTS AT WHL AND THEN DOES A RUNNER AND THE NEXT GUY SAYS WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP! WHERE DO WE GO FROM THERE “HOLD ALL TRANSFERS WHO HARRY WANTS UNTIL WE GET SOME DICKHEAD IN THAT KNOWS MRE ABOUT SNIPE SHOOTING AND THEN WE ARE BACK TO THE AVERAGE TEAM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TABLE OR DARE I SAY IT FIGHTING THE DROP PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE GOD NO COYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Johnston.. two words.. Aaah No!! Part of a defense that leaked 58 goals.. no thanks. Mind you knowing ‘Arry he’ll probably stick a bid on Upton and they leaked 70 goals lol.
I’m with you WAH on Zigic.. I can’t see Alec letting him go plus he reminds me of Crouch and we’re trying to get rid of one of them already 😉

    • But last season Birmingham were so solid at the back. I think though we need a left footed centre half who can play on the left hand side of a defence when King is not there. Dawson is amazing but hes better when he plays on the right had side of a defence e.g King and Bassong. I think Scott Dann who is injured at the moment would be a better option of we were going to buy a centre back from Birmingham as he is really good, young, has premier league experience and is left footed!COYS!

  9. Spurslife – totally agree. Scott Dann is the one to get. I think we were even linked with him at one point. The lad has a great future somewhere thats for sure. Not sure how much though $6 -9 mil?
