Jonathan Woodgate’s injury plagued Spurs career looks to be finally over with reports that he has been released by the club. Woody made just one appearance last season – as a substitute in the San Siro where he picked up another injury that seemed to typify his time at White Hart Lane.
There is talk however that his career may be offered a lifeline by former club Leeds who are lining him up for a return. Leeds boss Simon Grayson is obviously aware of the risk but maybe a playing/coaching role would suit all parties.
As far as Spurs are concerned, fans will recall the times when Woody and King played together and will wonder what might have been. Of course, the abiding memory of Woodgate’s spell at the club came with his winner at Wembley in 2008 and for that alone, he’ll always have a part of Tottenham history to take with him.

Woodgate was found guilty of affray and avoided a jail-term. The implication was certainly that the “victim” of the alleged attack had actually instigated the affray with his friends in the first instance and there was no indication that racism had any part in the event. That is other than the grandstanding used by the representives of that family to ensure that Woodgate and Bowyer did not get a fair trial.
Woodgate was well treated by Leeds but sold, against his wishes to Newcastle as the board panicked in the face of mounting debts. The fan base you claim to represent have voted consistently on websites that they would welcome him and other of our past stars back with open arms at the right price and if half-fit.
The maligned Smith is another sold to save the club and donating his signing fees back to the club that needed them more than him he was slaughtered for joining that club across the hills whose name escapes me. Would love his passion and quality back at Elland Road also at the right price.
