Watching England’s performances in the Euro Under 21 Championships has been a pretty dire experience but there has been one stand out player within the ranks.
Kyle Walker has impressed fans and pundits alike and after his man of the match performance in the opening game against Spain, England’s next opponents Ukraine deployed two men to mark him. Walker’s marauding runs from the back even prompted a section of the Spanish media to call him the new Roberto Carlos!
While at Villa last season, fans seemed to enjoy his attacking style but criticised his defending at times and the
player admits to an attacking instinct.
“I used to play for England Under-16s at centre-forward, so it’s probably come from there,” Walker said.
“I started going right-back at scholarship level. I’ve forgotten about my history of being a centre-forward and concentrated on being a right-back.
“I like to get forward but my job’s defending. It’s only a bonus going forward.”
Roberto Carlos aside, it looks increasingly likely that there will be no more loan moves for the player as he looks set to be elevated to the first team squad at the expense of Alan Hutton. However, would he be your first choice at right back or would you have him as understudy to Corluka for now?
