When Brad Friedel arrived at White Hart Lane this summer we knew that he wasn’t just being brought in as cover for Heurelho Gomes but after taking the number one jersey at the start of the season, just where does this leave our Brazilian, error-prone keeper?

Despite publicly backing Gomes after high profile mistakes against Real Madrid and Chelsea last season, you could sense the frustration in Harry Redknapp and after picking up an injury towards the end of the campaign, it was left to Carlo Cudicini to turn in some solid performances that helped the club to fifth place.

So what can we expect from Gomes this season? After two league games Friedel has let in eight goals but does that mean he’ll be a scapegoat that lets the Brazilian back in?

Can he come back from this stage in his Spurs career to reclaim the number one jersey or is this the beginning of an end that sees him shipped out of White Hart Lane?

Will Heurelho Gomes be a hit or miss in 2011-12?

  1. Is he currently injured? If not, it doesn’t look promising for him ‘cos he’s not even on the bench. Personally, I rate the guy.

  2. Friedel has shipped in eight goals because those playing in front of him are not up to the standard expected of them. Last season Gomes did have decent cover, but his failings cost us dearly. For a giant, the bloke is gutless and looks for injury before actually being injured, to a point where the manager (Ha!), or his team don’t know whether he’s feigning or not. Friedel has done little wrong and perhaps Harry should look closer at his coaches, but then again;he probably won’t!

    • I disagree, when did Gomes have a settled defence in front of him? To say Friedel has done nothing wrong is probably right if you mean by not being agile and mobile he never even attempted to move so he never made a mistake. If Gomes was English he would be given a much fairer crack of the whip by the pundits who love to criticize.Imo he’s our best goalie by a mile, given the chance with a defence he can trust

      • So in essence you’re saying that Gomes is the best keeper, so the reason’s for getting in Friedel were unfounded then, and the guy’s top notch, Sorry- mate who exactly were you watching last season?

  3. gormless has i call him is a better allround keeper than Friedegg who is another Robbo four great saves and five and three bad ones . Let me explain why Gomes is better than Friedel just like our Robbo he has concrete legs when the ball is delivered in the box and he is suspect from distance a great shot stopper just like Robbo who will mean we will have to score plenty at the other end just to et a draw and sometimes win, Gomes faults are he wanders of his line so he can get a head start when he needs to cover balls over the defensed these faults are worse when Ledley King is missing he started getting beat from distance and when he knocked Corluka out it affected him from commanding his area. Parks was brought in and gave him a pep talk but what really worked for me was King playing every week. This ment Gomes stayed where he is more at home and his octopus arms where outstanding tipping shots over the barand commanding his area we finished fourth its no suprise King was missing along with a revolving defense Gomes form and confidence suffered and we finished 5th Friedel should step down and only be cover because Cudicini has a better record and Gomes i think has never conceded 5 goals we need King and Gomes back soon.

  4. i approve of friedel he shakes a lot less

gomes does have octopus arms though

in conclusion a friedal man plus octopus arms is required

    sign him up

  5. easy why did the villa fans call freidel JESUS ,goalkeepers have become very good shot stoppers but the ball moves all over the place, and is very hard to hold , its very easy to criticise goalkeepers ,some of the commentators are a joke, and see gomaz is a easy target, the wankers and a lot of people fall for it and slag him off ,but i have neaver seen better saves from a keeper than gomaz against chavs and scum and milan away last season ,think i saw only pat do saves like that and southall against us ,but then the ball was neaver as lite as f***K an move all over the place!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I think it is the fact that Gomes is not English that’s hurting him, he commands his box and without him the defence will have to work twice as hard, which is why we’ve shipped 8 goals in 2 games. Harry worked with ‘Calamity’ James for years, never had a bad word for him and never thought of replacing him with a 40 year old freebie. Sure he makes mistakes, but for the first time in years we had a keeper who could pull off match winning saves on a regular basis, some of which got us into the Champions League.

  7. I have played with some terrible keepers at local level. It is virtually impossible to defend with one behind you. Is he coming? Is he not? Shall I make sure? Shit, he has dropped it. The defenders become nervous. they must have though on many occasions ‘for god sake Gomes’. He costs points every year. He can make worldys too, but I would rather he let them in and made sure that he was secure in the easy stuff. Dont love him, dont hate him but we will never win things regularly with him. Friedel is decent but only short term. There doesnt seem to be many great keepers. Look at England before Hart…..stockdale, carson, james, green………joe average

  8. I’ve never commented on one of these sites before, but Gomes just makes me so wound up I’ll make this a first.
Yes, he can make world class saves, but how many keepers in the Premier league can you say that about? Most of them I’d suggest, just some more than others.
To me, a season ticket holder at the Lane, and regular watcher of TV matches, Gomes has always been an accident waiting to happen. He is awful at catching the ball from crosses, his punches are weak and lack direction, and what annoys me most, his kicks are aimless, and his throws are either directly to the opposition, to a spurs player with 2/3 opposition players in close proximity of just throws like a cricket slow bowler, or so high that every player on the pitch has time to see where they are going.
Is Brad a significantly better keeper? I’m not convinced of that, but I do think he’ll give the defence a bit more confidence when defending the many crosses, corners and free kicks it is inevitable they will face, and he cannot be any worse at distribution (bring back Robbo, the best distributor I’ve seen in a Spurs shirt).

  9. Gomes all the way. Agree with Davspurs & Gary B; Friedel has concrete legs and Gomes can make match winning saves.
Gomes may be prone to the odd mistake – everyone is – but he has far more ability than Friedel.
If Harry can’t make the basic decisions right we could be looking at a long season ahead.

  10. gomes reminds me of a female australian tennis player of the past.at times her mind went on”walk about”.so it is with gomez.on his day hes up there with the best.he doesnt dominate the area.friedel has put in some good performances.dawson and kaboul in front of him are just not good enough against top class forwards.as arry solves one problem at spurs another one crops up.

  11. To be fair to Friedel, there was very little he could do about those 8 superb goals. The defence should take the blame, not Friedel and I very much doubt if Gomes could have saved those goals..

  12. ANY GK WOULD LOOK BETTER WITH LEDLEY OR GALLAS IN FRONT OF THEM. GOMES IS A CLOWN. DONT ENJOY CRITISISING MY OWN PLAYERS BUT HE SCARES THE CB PAIRING IN EVERY GAME. FRIEDEL IS NOT THE LONG TERM ANSWER BUT WILL MAKE LESS ERRORS. I LOST FAITH WITH GOMES AFTER THE DROGBA AND RONALDO GOALS LAST YEAR. AN U18 KEEPER WOULD HAVE SAVED THEM. HE HAS TO GO AND PLENTY OF OPTIONS OUT THERE TO REPLACE HIM
