Is this Ajax defender really Tottenham bound?

by Matthew Harris on December 2, 2011

The name of Jan Vertonghen was mentioned on here a few weeks ago but it seemed at the time that Spurs’ real target was Bolton’s Gary Cahill. However, stories emerging from Holland are adamant that Tottenham have agreed a £10m fee for the Belgian international and that the deal will be rubber stamped when the transfer window opens next month.

Vertonghen is still only 24 and has played at Ajax for his entire professional career, save for a season on loan at RKC Waalwijk in 2006-07. He also has 35 caps at full international level and is currently vice captain at the Amsterdam club.

He is versatile too and as a left footed central defender he can also fill in at left back or in defensive midfield but as far as Spurs are concerned, he would be seen as a long term successor to Ledley King.

Harry’s claim over the weekend that Spurs would not enter the transfer market in January would have been taken with the proverbial pinch of salt so is the Jan Vertonghen transfer really a done deal as many are suggesting?

Have seen him play and he is so good! He is much better than cahill, is an actual leader and is a year younger at 24 which is the same age as Kabouol. Vertonghen and Kaboul= future of Tottenham!

Looks Like Harry has finally concluded that while we have alot of cover on the right back front we conclude that BALE is not the cover for left back and we need a player to BAE . Bale is more of a menace as a winger. Get this guy. Bassong and Corluka – ship them off, Dawson and Gallas are the back up we need.

Why ask us we don’t work for Tottenham, how would we know?

Donny: Why in the world would we ship off Corluka? He was one of our most consistent players for a few years, is still young (24 or 25 can’t remember). He brings composure, perfectly weighted passes to the on-rushing Lennon (often splitting defenders) and can slot into CB when we are short there. Plus, he’s Luka’s best friend. Letting him go after a while if he can’t win back his place is one thing but shipping him off? Ridiculous.

Yea i thought that but watching him the other night he did look short of young Mr Walker. It could have been a shortage of match time I suppose, but all across the back we looked disjointed slow and exposed. could have been the people he was lined up with?

I wouldn’t ship him in January but he was second only to Pienaar as our worst player against PAOK. It looked like he was trying far too hard to impress and kept getting caught waaaay out of position, as well as giving the ball away needlessly and taking on too many defenders unnecessarily when he lacks the ability to do so. He was in no-man’s land for the second goal and allowed the cross to come in, and didn’t impress defensively in general. He needs a kick up the arse, and needs to be told that attempts at individual brilliance – unless completely consistent – are far inferior to keeping possession with solid play and helping to link the squad together.

Cover for BAE is vital. He’s an integral part of the squad and doesn’t get the attention he deserves; good as Walker is, I think BAE is a better player and there’s no dedicated left back to fill in for him if he’s injured or tired. At face value this looks like a good signing but I don’t really know anything about the player.

All idle speculation. Don`t get distracted guys. Top 4, for the next few seasons, new Stadium and training ground. Build it and they will come. It may not be Iowa but it certainly is our field of dreams.

Great ! : ) we really have a top class squad now and this addition will make it even stronger.

There is a few players i really think we need to sell that are not good enough and that will not be happy at not playing, but I dont think are good enough to be rotaed week in week out.

gomes – replace with hot prospect young keeper with potential.

bassong – showed the other night for the first goal, he’s not as good as our other centrebacks – replace with ‘Vertonghen’(belgian int’l and captain of ajax)

khumalo – not really done much, been injured, sell for 3m replace with one of the barcelona starlets we have been linked with ‘planas’, ‘montoya’ or ‘bartra’

corluka – always been a bit suspect in my opinion, not content to be walker backup. replace with ‘pereira’ portuguese int’l full back but versatile and can play on wing in midfield, perfect for rotation but good enough to start also.

jenas – sell to villa for 5m – replace with ‘bojan valero’ (equal to Xavi in assists in la liga last season, pass master – would be gr8 signing for 10m!)

bentley 3m – sign Falque on a perm for 3m (shown some nice touches and wing play, one for the future)

kranjcar 8m – deserves to play week in week out, buy ‘marko marin’ tricky german int’l class act – comparisons with modric, would fit in perfectly 12-15m

pienaar 6m – im sorry but i really have not seen anything to remotely impress me about him, he constanly tries things he cant do and gives away possesion – frustrating, put the funds towards adebeyors permenant switch 10m.

Pavlyuchenko 10m – needs to go, has a great shot but thats it, he needs to move to get in russia squad, would prob have takers in premiership, but sell and get some real class in, 1 of these 3 please ‘Leandro Damaio’ ‘Seydou Doumbia’ or ‘Moussa Sow’.

Squad done : )
I believe a good finish and CL qualification will enable us to sign all the above transfer targets.

COYS!

Maybe on Football Manager! Harry’s a wheeler-dealer in the transfer market (or so we’re constantly told) but these acquisitions would be the scoop of the century.

I agree with the ‘sell’ side of your post, and would generally like the ‘buy’ side, but I don’t know if it’d happen.

Falque and one of the Barcelona ‘starlets’ could realistically happen.
I would LOVE for Spurs to get Vertonghen — exactly what we need!
Bojan and Marin would both be great but I’d be pretty shocked if we get the above and even one of these two. Plus, we’d be moving on Kranjcar who is too good to sit on the bench, but wouldn’t his replacement be at least as good and just taking over the bench from Niko?

I say sell everyone you propose, get Falque, one of the Barca starlets, a young backup keeper, Vertonghen, Damiao (or a similarly young and talented forward — enough of the links to good players nearing retirement — what does that help us?), and, depending on how he performs, a replacement or backup for Lennon.

I realize that’s a lot, so 1 or 2 in January (Vertonghen would be wonderful) and the rest next summer.

really? i dont thinkso, adebeyoor and parker for 5m , i would say that is a scoop of the century!!

vertonghen sounds like its been agreed – scoop 1
pereira – portuguese int’l utility player plays in portugal, says he is very flattered to be linked with spurs – scoop 2
bojan valero – plays for villareal (currently 12th in la liga) – scoop 3
falque – already plays for us – scoop 4
marko marin – plays for average german team who has shown interest in kranjcar before, deal could surely be struck – scoop 5
adebeyor – already plays for us, enjoying his football – scoop 6.

and finally 1 from 3 strikers
‘Leandro Damaio’ ‘Seydou Doumbia’ or ‘Moussa Sow’
all would jump at the chance to play in premier league and go to a CL team – im sure we could get 1 of them if we tried – scoop 7

i dont think thats football manager stuff at all – they are all realistic targets if we are a CL team (all importantly)
get rid of the deadwood so we really do have 2 teams of players that you could rotate at will and still be as strong and win. that has to be the ultimate goal surely!
