It’s not a particularly new question but in the light of recent Spurs results it’s one that’s worth asking once again.
Unless you’re lucky enough to remember the great double winning side of 1960/61, you’ll probably recall the trophy winning teams of the last forty years: Four league cups, 3 FA Cups and 2 UEFA wins with sadly no league triumphs mixed in.
There’s been much talk this week about winning the league and although 90% of Spurs fans would feel this unlikely, a win on Saturday will take us second, albeit briefly. Although Spurs may have flirted with top slot in the very early stages of a Premiership season, when were we last in second place at the start of December?
Ignoring the first two games of the season, this has been one of the most exciting campaigns that I can remember in 40 years of hurt at the Lane. No defeats in 10 and some fabulous football being played at the same time.
At the other end of the scale are the cup competitions and whatever the reasons for fielding the sides we did, we effectively surrendered. Did anything good really emerge? Have the likes of Carroll, Townsend, Kane, Livermore or anyone else really proved that they have a future at the club?
To cut a long winded question short what is your priority and what do you think this Spurs side can achieve? Is it right to sacrifice the cups and would a consistent appearance in the top four make up for no silverware – that’s not a scenario that has kept fans and players happy on the other side of North London.
Alternatively, should anyone who asks this question just shut up and enjoy the football that’s currently being served up by the first string?

Top 4, finishing above Arsenal (with them not making CL) and hanging on to all our fist 11 players during next summer. That would be a good season and set us up nicely for further progress next year.
Couldn’t agree more!
I think to answer this question you need to ask yourself about where you see our future. Top 4 consistently will mean more money and more talent, and better 2nd string and youth players. We have learnt nothing from the cup players, accept that outside of our first 15-18 we dont have any real talent at the moment. However, if we didnt play youth, we would have burnt out, and be failing in the league. Then another 5th would have asking this question next year. However, 4th will tell us we need a few more squad players to compete on more fronts at a higher level. So to answer the question, the league is more important for our future, no matter how much we crave glory now, finishing in the top four consistently will bring trophies eventually.
New Stadium for me please. I feel that even if we finish in the top 4 and or win a cup or two, (even a couple of seasons in a row) we will never be able to compete on a long term basis with the uniteds, citys etc unless we have a much larger match by match income.
Title Challenge
Winning the league is about squad depth mate. While the Greeks certainly PAOK a mighty punch, they’re hardly world-beaters, and they proved that Tot’s depth is perhaps more shallow than many Tot fans would like to believe. Your “title contenders” are a very good team, but Bolton last year and Blackpool the year before are perfect examples of why it doesn’t necessarily pay to get ahead of yourselves at Christmas.
ManU will inevitably buy a world class attacking midfielder – has experience not taught you the idiocy of writing off United? Every year people write them off, and every year they defy expectations.
Chelsea, likewise, are only a few players away from a great squad. Everyone was writing them off last year, and look how they finished the season. If they get a solid centre back and a quality striker, they’ll start moving.
Arsenal showed on Tuesday that their squad is perhaps stronger than some people give credit. Make no mistakes, that was a very strong City team, and the Gunners almost had the rub off the green. They’re another quality striker away from being a serious force.
Liverpool are a bunch of pricks, and will no doubt be hampered by the loss of Lucas, but Bellamy and Suarez are on fire and will cause the teams around them a few difficulties.
Between Feb and March ’12, Tots play ‘pool (A), (Newcastle (H)), Arsenal (A), ManU (H), Everton (A) and Chelsea (A)… Oh, and you’ve got City (A) at the end of Jan… I think all this title talk is a little premature?
I think Tot should aim for 3rd (tops). King’s way past his season quota. Bale, Modric and VDV are a little wet, and Ade’s soon going to stop “feeling the love” – he always does.
That’s a great spine, but it has serious flaws.
See you in March, Tots.
Lt’s all decend to an infantile level. So instead of Tots it’s Nomads at the Emptcrates. See it’s not difficul;t to be infantile.
“Bale, Modric and VDV are a little wet” but greater breadth than RVP the mug carrier. Injury record almost on a par with King.
Chelsea “If they get a solid centre back and a quality striker, they’ll start moving” Suppose they could junk the bargain basement Torres and Luiz! And they cost….?
Such a long analysis of Spurs. klklk musat obviously devote an abnormal amount of time to watching another team other than his own. Could it be that this troll can’t find anything of interest in the Arsenal?? Could it be that he has the IQ of Wiltshire and the same attention span of gnat. We are most grateful for his devotion to our team.
Perhaps thgis “strong ” Arsenal team might beat Tottenham again some time in the future. Smacks of looking in his rearview mirror ,living in the past and ignoring the unpalatable presnt and future. Now let me have a look at the Premier League table…….
I’m a city fan fuckwit. By all means look at the table… It makes for pleasant reading!
I was simply saying that it pays not to get ahead of yourselves. Even we aren’t talking about the title yet… Arsenal are one of a number of teams you should be worrying about…
Oh, and the rearview mirror’s exactly where I’m looking!
We aren’t saying that. City are more likely to win the league than spurs are. Now piss off you mainstream twat, who probably only just started supporting City after their massive triumph to the start of the season. City are an amazing team, and we tots are blatantly aware of that, as they are ahead of us on the table. And lastly, this is a blog dedicated to a team you don’t even support, so as to why you even have the time to be looking at blogs of team, who probably from you’re perspective aren’t even good, i really do not have an actual idea you are even commenting. City aren’t even tottenham’s greatest rivals. Arsenal fans are a given, but this is the first. And taking Utd’s side of tottenham. You blatantly don’t know shit about your team.
We qualify for CL and keep our best players and attract quality to the club. Finish the stadium. If the club fails to reach CL then witness and exodus of first teamers.
4th in the league is the absolute priority. If we don’t make the CL then we’ll likely lose players like Modric and Bale to clubs who can offer better wages and more glory. Getting into the CL means money and a greater international/domestic profile to attract a few more high-quality players that’ll give us serious rotation options.
Give the FA cup to the Europa League squad. Being out of the Carling Cup is doing us a favour and we don’t have the depth to seriously compete in more than one competition. All else is secondary to the league this season; get a CL spot and we have a springboard to go on and challenge to be a genuine top 4 club, but miss out and we’ll drop players and cash and struggle to make it again, what with the ferocity of competition for those 4 spots at the moment.
