‘The biggest deal since Klinsmann’

by Matthew Harris on December 14, 2011

Quiet rumours about a Tottenham move for Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez have been appearing in the press since the start of the season and while there was a brief acceleration in the stories after the Argentinean’s alleged refusal to come on as sub in Munich, most Spurs fans have rightly ignored them.

However it’s difficult to ignore the reports this morning that are splashed over the Daily Mail that suggest a £20m offer is imminent.

The story quotes a ‘source’ at Tottenham who says,

‘People at Tottenham reckon a deal like this could be bigger than anything since they signed Jurgen Klinsmann.

‘There’s definite interest. The big stumbling block could be whether or not City are prepared to do business with a team now regarded as one of their rivals for the title.’

All of these stories seem to gloss over the small matter of Tevez’ £200,000 a week wages and as such, can this just be filed as a non-starter?

In the last week there have been stories connecting the club with Kaka, a permanent move for Adebayor and now the Tevez link. Are Spurs really about to move to the next level with wages of this kind?

The wages are not a problem because you can make wages up by bonuses and Marketing rights executive boxes at the new stadium, and so on.

I’ts never going to happen,Tottenham are owned by Jews and Man City are owned by Arabs, remember they prefered to let Bellamy drop a league and play for Cardiff than sign for us.You will never see any buisiness between these two clubs and it’s not because they are rivals for the league

Levy vs. bin Zayed Al Nahyan?

That sounds about right John – but you forget, both LOVE money, so if there’s a deal to be made, you can guarantee these two will find a way, regardless of the situation…! ;-) ))

This is a load of rubbish, we will not be paying those kind of wages while trying to fund a new stadium. Someone is trying to bump up his price.

I think man city would rather see us up there with them than Man U, Chelsea or Arsenal as they see us less of a financial threat to them in the long run.

sign adebeyour perm for 10m (as quoted in press) give him a signing on fee to make up the wages.

sell dos santos 8m

same with Tevez 20m with a signing on fee to make up the wages (might be an idea to put a default clause in if he decides to go walkabout)!

buy moussa sow 15m

sell pavlyuchenko 10m

get kaka in on loan

sell pieanaar 7m

buy marko marin 15m

sell jenas to villa 5m

buy Vertonghen 10m

sell corluka 8m

buy krull 8m

sell bassong 5m
sell bentley 3m
sell khumalo 3m
sell gomes 6m

-22m net

Haha. Pav 10m? – £8m max. GDS – £5m max. Pienaar – £5m max. Charlie – £5m. Bassong is of to QPR – £3m. Gomes with 6 months left on his contract – £500,000 max. Get real.

Mattyboy December 14, 2011 at 11:57 am

you seem to be forgetting this is Daniel Levy!
Pav has a great reputation amongst the Russian Clubs, from his high scoring in their league and international striker status and lets face it they are not short of money! just look at what they have been splashing out recently! 10m is definately gettable from a russian side.

Dos Santos has been outstanding for Mexico recently and had a brilliant World Cup. He’s also scored the Goal of the year not long ago and is only 22!! He is definately worth 8m im just bemused we cant seem to accomodate him!

Levy bought Bassong for 8m he will not let him go for 3m as a matter of principle, 5m is not too much for an international defender who had a good couple of seasons for us till his form has understandably dipped since a serious lack of playing time!

Corluka was linked with an 8m switch to liverpool , they love to pay over inflated prices !

Also i think the Tevez thing could happen with the help of a certain Mr Ardiles to make things run smoothly! Show him the tape of Maradonna playing for spurs and Ricky and Ossie winning rthe FA cup to get the juices flowing!

Me Again December 14, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Sorry to shoot this one down but players values can also correspond with the amount of time left on their contracts. If you yourself could get any of these amounts for the players mentioned then I’m sure Daniel would happily give you a job.

Seville wanted to pay us £3m for Gio last summer which we turned down (reluctantly).

never going to happen. we’re not financially stupid. levy is a smart businessman-very shrewd and he tends to stay away from the ‘big’ players, opting for lesser known big talents. he would be great but could also do a lot of damage in the dressing room. we have a great manager in getting along with the players but if and when harry leaves for england job the next candidate may not be able to handle the argentinians attitude. why did fergie get shot of him?……after all he’s better than what man u already have apart from rooney

Why was BAE so offpace at Stoke? Possibly because he had a clash with Andros Townsend earlier in the week ?

Goes to show how fragile team spirit can be, even after a record run of wins.

Signing Tevez would be fantastic on one hand (goal scoring ability) but disasterous on the other hand – the blighter would sew discord in the dressing room.

Another example of a tools reporting i think.

Sign Messi outright? Don’t be silly!

We’re going to take him on loan for January and then snap him up at a reduced price in the summer, with a signing-on fee to compensate for the £60,000/week we’ll be paying him.

The biggest problem is ManC’s willingness to sell him to another premier league club. If there are short of takers then it might happen but there are already 3 interested clubs in PSG, Juve and AC Milan. If they do decide to sell him to us then you have to convince the player to stay in England but this is much lesser issue than his hugh wages as i don’t think he will have any problem getting his family settled over here.

Apparently Fernando Torres, could be sold for £20million! That could be an amazing deal for us! I know it means communicating with Chelsea which is the last thing Daniel Levy wants to do but Torres would be amazing at the lane! I know hes well crap now but to be honest no one really wants him at Chelsea. Anchollotti didnt want him and even if he did hes not there any more, AVB would rather play Drogba and Sturridge and based on form rightly so. I think Harry is the man to resurrect his career. Having, Defoe, Torres and Adebayor would surely help us win the league. I think the reason Chelsea want Modric is to unlock Torres potencial, When he was at his best he was playing with the likes of Alonso and Gerrard- Modric, van der Vaart, Parker and Huddlestone are not bad in comparison. I think Spurs are the team to get back the old Fernando Torres, saying that its probably not going to happen! Oh well! COYS!

Daniel December 14, 2011 at 6:31 pm

Not questioning his talent, but do we really want players like that?
Maybe it’s enough for teams like Chelsea and City to guy whatever players are currently making news, but should Spurs do that as well?

Spurs have good teamwork and apparently good chemistry. I like that our star players are humble (generally) and not as mercenary as on other teams (sure Modric thought about leaving it who would not be flustered by the ridiculous money being discussed for him?) At the end of the day I’m glad that we don’t have any Nani’s, Tevez’s, Balotelli’s, etc.

I’d be much happier developing young talent rather than buying older, arrogant players. That’s just me, though.

wed have to sell vdv tho as he causes a problem and an imbalance, id rather have defoe start all day long, you cant fit vdv anywhere unless defoe is injured or suspended.

Levy will be crazy to throw 20mil at a player who could threaten to retired in a week, homesick the next, refused to be a sub, and a million other reasons.

utter dick.

On the tevez debate, would really want the player but really don’t want the person. to but him seems to almost condone his behaviour. would rather see him rot int he reserves for city while he thinks how he has cocked up a a career that most of us can only dream about.
We don’t need that much in jan: Moussa sow and a central Defender as back up as bass should be gone. poss experienced cover for BAE if, god forbid, he ever got injured. Too many changes in Jan aren’t needed and expensive
