How should King be managed over the holiday period?

by Matthew Harris on December 21, 2011

Although the claims that Ledley King is something of a ‘lucky charm’ may be slightly exaggerated, it’s no co-incidence that his return to the side has seen Spurs climb the league table and into their current third place.

The chronic problems that prevent our club captain from training and lead to frequent absences are well documented but the importance of Thursday night’s game could see him take the field in a midweek match for the first time in over a year.

Normally, Ledley would need a full week to recover from 90 minutes of first team action but he may well feature from the start tomorrow evening. It’s believed that Harry Redknapp desperately wants his skipper to play and will assess the situation later today.

Christmas always throws up a congested calendar and looking at the fixture list coming up, it’s inconceivable that King will play a full part.

Tomorrow night is followed by Norwich away on the 27th, Swansea away (31st), then a run of four home games – West Brom on the 3rd of January, Cheltenham on the 7th, Everton (11th) and Wolves on the 14th before we return to a regular period of weekly action.

Assuming there are no further injury problems, how would you manage Ledley and our back line over the holiday season, bearing in mind Gallas and Dawson have also endured their own problems?

Should a swift January signing be made perhaps?

We should play Ledders against Cheatski, then give him a rest for either swansea and norwich, I reckon we should by samba in January coz I think hes a good player despite blackburns poor form, but I think gary cahill isn’t all that. I also think dawson is too slow and gallas is getting on a bit now but if he plays against chelsea like he did against arsenal last season then I will rest my case about r william.

Hmm. Did you see Samba last night? Terrible clearance by him went straight to attacker you teed up the first goal. Tall, commanding, immense, actually has skill on ball, and can finish with head or foot – BUT I have my doubts about that fella. If he kicked it out for a corner – like Ledley would have – there would not have been a goal.

I think thats a bit harsh to judge him on one goal considering blackburn are terrible. I know ledders is far a better player but ledders would make samba look better, I mean I would look amazing alongside king.

It’s as simple as it can be with King – if he’s fit, he plays. There’s no point saving him for any other game because it’s just as likely that he’ll break down making breakfast before it even comes around!

The only game he shouldn’t be considered for is Cheltenham – apart from that, take it game-by-game and get as many minutes as we can out of him.

if fit then LK plays in the Chelsea game and then rested to allow for recovery with a view to playing again if fit against Everton.

Akhtar, we need him for one of the away games because I think norwich and swansea will be tougher than everton, just because we are away 4 them.

Nikolay – I think you missed the point here. Ledley CAN and HAS played 4 games in 2 weeks before. The question is SHOULD HE? The answer is that with Gallas back, perhaps not. Save Kingy for the big games – Chelsea and perhaps Everton – “big” because I guess that is our game in hand. A lot have people have mistakenly taken that game in hand as 3 points.
