Laboured victory highlights need for new recruits

by David Jones on December 22, 2011

After the defeat to Stoke at the Britannia Stadium recently, it was important for Spurs to get back to winning ways. White Hart Lane has been a fortress for us in recent seasons but the Martin O’Neil factor was always likely to threaten our chances last Sunday against Sunderland.

In the end a moment of magic from Dutchman Van der Vart and an emphatic finish from forgotten man Roman Pavlyuchenko secured the points.

The game itself was a tense affair that could have gone either way and if Sunderland still possessed a forward with Darren Bent’s qualities then I don’t think Spurs would have been victorious.

While we have admired the fluidity of Spurs football this season sometimes you need to win ugly; we haven’t been known to possess this quality in the past but and as demonstrated against Fulham we seem to be learning. Fergie and Mourinho were both masters of winning ugly when they had to, but in fairness they always had the squad depth to cover most situations. Spurs are in a similar situation now and recent results support this.

With January approaching Spurs have the perfect opportunity to finely tune the squad for the remainder of the season and all fans will be desperately hoping that we don’t make the same mistake of last year, when failure to sign a striker saw our league form decline.
The Europa League has highlighted the talent that is worthy of developing and has hopefully confirmed to the manager who is dispensable and who isn’t.

My shopping list for Mr Levy is as follows:

Gary Cahill – There has been so much speculation as to where Cahill will move to, and with Wenger and Villas-Boas both ruling out a transfer hopefully the England International will be heading to the Lane. I was always of the opinion that we had sufficient cover in this position but the facts are that both King and Dawson are injury prone, Bassong doesn’t have the quality and Gallas isn’t strong enough and realistically only has another season left at this level.

That leaves Younes Kaboul as the only quality central defender who can be relied upon. There are other suitable options such as Chris Samba and Phil Jagielka but given Cahill’s contractual situation, the price will be right for the astute Daniel Levy to broker a deal.

Junior Hoilett – With Blackburn in a precarious financial position this is another deal that looks possible. Add to that the fact that Hoilett’s contract is running short and we could grab ourselves a real bargain if we secure the Canadian’s signature. With Aaron Lennon’s recent injury and Giovanni Dos Santos looking likely to leave, this transfer is crucial in my opinion. Hoilett could cover any of the attacking positions and at twenty one years of age he has the potential to become a top talent.

Many people including Spurs believed that Ashley Young wasn’t worth the ten million Watford were demanding, but Aston Villa took a gamble and were significantly rewarded. Young is a similar type of player to Hoilett, but the Blackburn forward has already proved he can succeed at this level, so hopefully the Spurs board will not see the deal as too risky.

Leandro Damiao – Unfortunately we may have missed our chance with the prolific Brazilian forward as now the whole of Europe are monitoring the situation. With David Villa out of contention for Barcelona there could be interest there, and sadly there are many teams in Europe with the spending power to blow Spurs out of the running. Hopefully Spurs commercial ties with Internacional can assist us with convincing the player to join his compatriot Sandro at the Lane.

Harry has stated that Spurs will target a special player if one becomes available, twenty two year old Damiao certainly fits the criteria. Another option to consider is Demba Ba, who if he continues to score at the rate he has, will not be wearing the black and white of Newcastle for very long.

Merry Christmas and ‘Come on you Spurs’

Agree with you on Hoilett and Damiao (though everything I know about Damiao is based on what I’ve read other Spurs fans saying).

I don’t see what the fuss is about over Gary Cahill though. He has been in the team for every one of Bolton’s embarrassingly bad performances this season, and has to be at least partly responsible for the worst defence in the league. Do we really want to bring that into the squad when Daws is on his way back?

Tonight against Chelski will be no different with two ex Liverpool players in there camp they will be flying and chasing the ball from the off. Last night one ex Liverpool rescued three points for Arsenal Benayoun. Liverpool is the team who taught me about high tempo playing i live 12 miles form the smell of sweat.Spurs 3-Chelsea 1

Cahill would offer strength and courage to a an ageing back line. Next year King, Kaboul, Cahil, Dawson, and Caulker. he has looked poor because Bolton are awful, look at Cahill for England with a decent partner and midfield in front and he looks an excellent player, better positional sense than Dawson and a massive aerial threat at Corners!!

You obviously know nothing about football!!!

It was always going to be difficult losing Azza and Bale and then having to re-shuffle the pack to accommodate Pav.

On top all that… A revitalised Sunderland turn up and put ten men behind the ball and make us try and break them down!!

Agree slightly with Nikolay about Cahill. I rate him, he’s a good CB. But I have seen a number of goals they have let in where he’s been left standing, similar to how Dawson get’s caught out sometimes. I rate Dawson too, but we should be looking for someone on Ledley King’s level to improve the squad. Dawson will struggle to get back into the team with Gallas, King and Kaboul fit & on form.

Davspurs – reason to buy is; defence – King struggles to play most games, Gallas is losing it, was really poor against Stoke and get bullied by forwards.
midfield – we now have no pace on flanks, especially on the right. Pienaar is not good enough, Kranjcar (sub role/squad player), younsters – need time.
forwards – Pav has no heart for it, Ade will go back end of year, VDV – hamstrings and we are over reliant

Would be interested to see if Vertonghen was up to standard, but it’s hard judging from the Dutch league.

Ajax captain and Belgium captain. He’d be a great compliment to Kaboul.

Simon – agree with your points but Gio flatters to decieve and will be off so Hoilett would be perfect for either flank.

if you stand still – you get left behind! look at Fergie, always invests regardless of prev seasons success

DJ – I can see the logic in buying hoilett but to be honest, I’d rather keep my powder dry until the summer and make Adebayor our number one signing, he gives us something that none of our other strikers do. He influences games against the top four! Defoe has never done it, Pav no heart or desire to succeed!!

Spurs’ squad depth is pretty good – perhaps short cover in a few areas but to have as many injuries as we did vs Sunderland and still win shows resilience and ability to grind results out when needed. Would disagree re Cahill – nothing this season has convinced and his stats for this and previous years are poor in comparison to other EPL defenders such as Alex, Hangeland etc. Better out here in EPL and in Europe. Damiao is an unknown quantity as is Holiett [one decent half of a season]. They are both promising but will that be enough to cement top 4 place and UCL. Better in Jan [even if on loan] to get experience in to achieve top 4 target and reassess in summer

There is no way in hell we will be signing anyone in Jan. So please, do not start clammering for new signings and getting people worked up. Have you seen the size of our squad? YOu think we will be signing a new CB when we have 5 full international, very highly paid CBs on the books already? You are in fantasy land.

The wage bill is over target and the transfer kitty is empty. These are the facts. Fringe players will be leaving, nobody you have ever heard of will be coming in. Regardless of what you think ‘we need’ (that win took us to 3rd in the league, in case you hadnt noticed)

Where’s all the transfer money, then?
Since getting into the Champions League (and all the money that came with it) who have we spent it on?

Friedel — free
Pienaar — something like 1.5 – 2m, wasn’t it?
Gallas — free?
Ade — loan
Parker — 8m
VdV — 8m
a small amount on youth players (who look like a great investment)

Am I forgetting anyone? It looks like less than 20m over close to 3 years, and that’s not counting anything we’ve recouped from sales (Crouch, Hutton, Palacios, etc…)

I’m not saying we can/should play silly-money like city, but we should be able to buy a couple of quality players, either now or in the summer.

Leandro, Vertonghen & Hoilett and we’re looking very good IMO.

Can’t we just buy Demba Ba?
Hoillett’s looking good in a crap team. Cahill’s looking crap in a crap team

Holiett would be a great addition to our reserves (who dont actually play in a league any more). WTF are you guys smoking? Hoilett wouldnt get anywhere near our first team. Who is he replacing? Bale? VDV? Lennon? He’d be somewhere behind Pienaar and Krancjar in the pecking order. He might even be behind Bentley, who had a far greater impact at B’burn than Hoilett has had.
