The transfer of Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen moved a step closer this week with reports that the Belgian international would not be signing an extension to his current contract which expires next year.

There is no suggestion in the report that Ajax have been attempting to tie Vertonghen to a longer deal but his comments are further confirmation that he will shortly be on his way out of Amsterdam.

“I will not prolong my stay,” he said. “I hope to move to a beautiful English club – a club where, as with Ajax, I can play for a long time. The atmosphere in England is fantastic. I’ll certainly miss Ajax and Amsterdam, but I’m planning to hold onto my home in Amsterdam.”

The question is, will it be Spurs? There certainly seems to be a need for new blood at the heart of defence next season but can Vertonghen be persuaded to make his next move towards the right side of North London?
