When Luka Modric burst the rigging in the first half of last night’s match at Bolton Wanderers, the commentary suggested that he doesn’t score enough goals for the club. We have debated this before and the general consensus is that he doesn’t have to – in the same way that players such as Iniesta don’t break any scoring records for their clubs.

However, that does mean that we have two central midfielders that don’t find the net that often but with Bale and Lennon in the side, maybe that doesn’t matter either.

Coming on to the point of this piece, Spurs have been linked today with a move for PSV’s Dutch international Georginio Wijnaldum who plays as either an attacking central midfielder or out on the wing. Reports suggest that he’s a Modric but with more goals and unless Luka does move on, it seems unlikely that he would take a slot in the centre of Tottenham’s middle four.

Alternatively, he could be moved out to the wing if he were to arrive with claims that he wants to move away from Holland and exercise a £20m buy out clause.

The player’s portfolio seems similar to that of Eden Hazard and if the Lille playmaker were to go somewhere other than White Hart Lane, Wijnaldum looks to be the best alternative mentioned so far.

Could the Dutchman provide the extra goals from midfield? Is this even an area of our game that needs addressing?

  1. An out and out european CL class or at least top Premier League goal scorer is surely top priority given the number of chances that we have missed, games we have dominated etc etc. Then similar class centre back [s], then replacement wingers. That’s my order of priorities.

  2. Lead the line striker, centre back, cover for right wing and a potential number 1. Also we need to give Saha another year as he seems to be a good squad player.

    • Modric can sulk all he likes again but CL or Not he will be staying … Levy does not have to sell, last year showed that, when u sign a contract that is it, you are committed unless the management want you out. Modric sulked and sulked but Levy for once stood firm and too be honest, I dont think on this years performance he would get many bids, also remember he is another year older … if anybody goes this year it will be the fringe players like Defoe … up front we are loosing the games not in the midfield.

  3. Also hearing about Ganso and Remy being done deals…though can’t find anything concrete. I don’t see us needing either of these players above many other options, such as striker, centre back and winger back up/competition.

  4. Georginio Wijnaldum looks a very good option he’s very skillful fast and powerful he would fit into the spurs team perfectly just have a look at him on youtube and you will understand what im saying. I think the game against bolton was one of our best performances, when we play the ball from the back quickly we’re so fast its hard to stop us but when we build up slowly we tend to lose the ball easily, our team is full of skill and pace so we have to use these qualities to our advantage, tell me what you think. warrior

  5. Are you kidding?

Wijnaldum is a lightweight. He overcomplicates things to a ridiculous degree, doesn’t track back, is poor at defending, has very limited vision and is clearly not good enough for the Premier League.

He’s nothing like Modric. Wijnaldum either plays as a wide left midfielder or a #10 attacking midfielder. He’s not even the best in the Eredivisie in that position, let alone good enough to play for a top 4 Premier League side.

Comparing him to Eden Hazard is quite frankly ridiculous.

    • There’s a lot of talk about replacing Modric — but we didn’t take a crazy offer last summer and I’d be surprised if that offer went up a year later. Why would we change our minds and sell?

I could see a backup/understudy for VdV and while I’m not familiar with this player he sounds like the TYPE of player we’d want for that.
He’s only 21, scores around a goal every 3 games, his main position is AM but can double on the wings.

How much longer will we have VdV? He’s said he wants to end his career in the Eredivisie so maybe 1 or 2 more years at the Lane? This would be a good time to bring someone in so they’re not adjusting to the team/environment/playing style right when we need them to perform. Just be sure to rotate them.

    • No, you clearly haven’t had a proper look. I’ve seen him play for numerous seasons in the Dutch league. He’s nothing special.

He himself thinks he’s a Bobby Big Bollocks but even PSV supporters have no clue why they’ve paid €5m for him.

The fact the title hails him as a Dutch international while he only has 2 caps says it all. He’s not a Holland regular at all.

Other young Dutch Eredivisie players like Adam Maher and Kevin Strootman are much bigger talents than Wijnaldum. Strootman already has 10 caps and has received praise by Van Marwijk ever since he joined the Dutch national team. Maher has already attracted interest by Barcelona, Man City, Juventus and Real Madrid.

      • Agree with u about wijnaldum Dutch, watched him in a couple of Europa LG games a while back & couldn’t see it with him reminds me of tarrabt a bit hit & miss.
What do u think of labyad & narsingh, I think there both talented but how consistent I don’t know. Personally I’d like us to sign eljero Elia as competition for bale & lennon, I’ve heard his younger brother is something special as well 11yr old already playing with u-15’s

        • Narsingh is a very talented right winger. He’s currently top of the Eredivisie assists chart. Great player. I think he’s Ajax-bound. A good step in his career. Going abroad might be a bit too soon now. He will be a Holland regular in the coming years.

Labyad has already signed a contract at Sporting Lisbon. Not a great player either. Very bad attitude as well. He pretty much held PSV hostage during contract negotiations (a bit like Judas Sol), while he never had the intention to renew his contract. Now he’s walking out on a free.

Elia made a very bad career move by going to Juventus. Probably got talked into it by his agent. He will most likely miss out on Euro 2012 because of his lack of regular football. Not sure what Juve’s asking price is but at £5-6m he’s definitely worth a punt.

Twente’s Ola John is a very talented wide player too. Mostly plays left winger but he’s reasonably two-footed so he can switch sides. It’s rumoured Twente are holding out for a big offer for him this Summer.

  6. dont need playmaker ,we need 2 world class strikers…how many times has the ball been played between the oppositions back 4 and keeper and theres no one there and thats what we need to finish teams off….. a couple of old style goal poachers ie huntelaar…damiao also a young cb and young keeper and cover for the wings and rb position either bring in young talent for this or use our own young players………we need to spend big in the summer and get the deals done and not last minute crap either…… coys

  7. Nolito of Benfica could fit the bill as he plays right wing, left wing or striker – cover for Bale & Lennon by buying one player, also scored twice Vs Maritimo at the w/end. Apparently Necastle, Liverpool and QPR have checked him out.

  8. What about Lavezzi rumour is he wants to leave Napoli available for about 12-14 million? Can play wide left or Stiker

  9. Keep an eye out for Atletico Madrid’s front players in the Europa League final. We probably all know Falcao by now but Adrián is a very very talented player. Capped at U-21 level for Spain, rumoured to be a target for other Spanish clubs.

I also really like Atletico’s Salvio. Plays right winger and attacking midfielder. Could be an interesting alternative to Hazard
