The club website has finally announced something that we’ve been expecting for ages with the news that Ledley King has called time on his playing career. Spurs have confirmed that he will stay involved however in an ambassadorial capacity.

“Ledley has made a magnificent contribution to this Club – as a wonderful player, Captain and ambassador,” said Daniel Levy.

“It is in an ambassadorial capacity that Ledley will continue, playing a crucial role in supporting the Club’s work in the community and the ongoing regeneration of the Tottenham area, whilst also being a hugely positive role model for our younger players.”

The player himself added,

“I have been here since I was a boy, I have always considered it my Club and have always found it hard to imagine wearing the shirt of another team.

“I would like to say thank you to everyone at the Club and to the fans. I have missed a lot of football over the years, but the Spurs fans have always been patient and incredibly supportive with me during difficult periods. Sadly my injuries and inability to train have now finally brought an end to my career.”

When you look back on someone’s career you tend to remember goals but as a centre half, there aren’t quite so many in Ledley’s case. At present however, Ledley still holds the record for the fastest Premiership strike!

So what was your favourite memory of our club captain? Lifting the Carling Cup in 2008 maybe – or was there one single game that defined Ledley at his very best?

  2. Long live the King!! You have ruled us well!!
Vertonghen, Dawson, Kaboul and Caulker…… do us proud!! Step forward the new King…… King Vertonghen

  3. That tackle against Robben when we played Chelski at whl a few years ago. Came out from nowhere to save a certain goal and led us on to win the game.
Did something similar against Norwich too i think when Darren Huckerby was through on goal.
Spurs legend, one of the best defenders in the world, even with one knee.

  4. MotM when he first broke through – Everton away. Think we had 2 mean sent off Taricco and Poyet(?)) and Ledders got MotM. Been superb ever since.

  5. All the goals he scored from corners/set pieces when we used to sing “Deadly Ledley”. Will miss that, fo’ sho’…

  6. Performance against France for England where he was sheer class, his tackle v Arjen Robben against Chelsea at the Lane. Absolutely tore up the ground to make up 10 to 15 yards on the lightning fast chelsea striker to make a last ditch, perfectly timed goal saving tackle, but best of all him lifting the carling cup. It is only fitting that he got the privilege of lifting a trophy for us after staying with us. I am sure he would have been snapped up by one of the ECL big 4 if he hadnt suffered with injuries, but great to see he has a role to play at THFC.

  7. Robben tackle is the stand-out – absolute class.
For me personally though, his header against the arse to put us 1 up at WHL from a corner down the Paxton road end, getting goosebumps just thinking about it. That was my 1st ever Spurs/Arsenal and to go 1 up was amazing.
