The Premier League season is upon us and that can mean only one thing – another pointless friendly is on the cards as England get ready to tackle Italy next week.

Ahead of that game, Roy Hodgson has named an inexperienced squad which includes Kyle Walker together with first senior call ups for both Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore.

Caulker has four caps at under 21 level and impressive displays in these matches, together with solid performances for Team GB at London 2012 will surely have helped his elevation. For Jake meanwhile, this seems to be his first England call at any level.

Suddenly, a meaningless friendly has become interesting and we wish all players well while hoping they all remain injury free on Wednesday night.

  1. Oh! C’mon, it’ll take more than a couple of mini spuds to make this travesty of a fixture interesting. Iain’s got it right, only a moron (sadly the FA is stuffed with them) could have arranged a friendly following not only the Euros but also the Olympics. All this and the season hasn’t even started yet.
