There is an ageing and injury prone look about Tottenham’s defence at the moment but on the occasions when players are fully fit, the centre of that defence looks to be one area where there is plenty of cover.

It’s still unclear as to what AVB’s first choice pairing would be but many would like to see Kaboul and Vertonghen at the heart with Steve Caulker as first choice cover. That still leaves Dawson and Gallas in reserve – assuming Michael stays at the club when the window opens next month.

All of this would seem to rule out a move for Everton’s Sylvain Distin who looks certain to leave Goodison Park in January.

“I’m not ready to be on the bench at all and that’s a good thing,” Distin is quoted as saying “I’m working hard every day not to be on the bench, but we have four great centre-backs.”

The Frenchman would bring some experience to the side but he turns 35 later this month and doesn’t seem to offer anything that William Gallas hasn’t got covered.

A more likely option may have been Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross who has been mentioned in connection with Spurs and his former club Manchester United for some time. Shawcross is 25 and has just broken into the England side but suggestions are that he’s set for a new, long term deal at the Britannia.

“I want to stay and they want to keep me,” Shawcross said. “The talks are ongoing. I’m happy, the club is happy.

“I don’t want to go — even if a top four club comes in for me — but it’s all down to the people above me now.”

AVB has already said that he doesn’t see any additions to the squad and while that may have been a smokescreen, the two links here seem to be among the more unlikely ones ahead of the January sales.

  1. Keep Daws, get Kaboom fit and ship out Gallas, who has very quickly become a liability.

We need an old timer who’s happy to sit on the bench and pick up his wage, like Ryan Nelson. We’re actually ok at CB, it’s left back where we’ve struggled, forcing the issue in the middle.

I’d like to see Danny Rose brought back and given a few games. We play enough matches to give Benny 40 & Rose 20 games a season.

Our money should be spent on a versatile, creative midfielder. A marquee £20m signing to get us a CL spot. VdV brought the best out of Modric and Bale and someone similar could do the same for Dembele and possible Sig, Dempsey and Ade.

    Willian please!
