Goal scoring was never the main focus of Scott Parker’s game but a rare strike from our midfielder would have been welcome – even if it did come in an under 21 Premier League match against Aston Villa.
Scott made his second appearance as an overage player – by some 11 years – and scored the first goal in a comfortable 3-0 win last night. It was a typical Parker strike – for those that can remember them as he drilled the ball in from the edge of the box as half time approached.
Scott’s goal had doubled the lead after an earlier Ryan Mason effort and in the second period, Tottenham continued to dominate. Finally, a Souleymane Coulibaly tap in sealed the win as the youngsters claimed top spot in the division.
The achievement was a notable one for the under 21 side but for many, the focus is on the return of Scott Parker and as he reaches full fitness, there is considerable competition in midfield – a fact acknowledged by Moussa Dembele.
‘I know if I play one bad game then Jake Livermore, Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone, Tom Carroll, there are a lot of good players who are behind me to come in and who can do well,’ Dembele said.
‘So we have to keep playing and that keeps the level high in this team.’
Immense displays from Moussa and Sandro will keep Scott on the bench for now but he remains a key player over the next few months.
