Spurs defence coped admirably with the threat posed by Manchester United yesterday and they did it without the help of the one man who many feel has been our best player this season.

Jan Vertonghen was forced to miss the game through illness, even though he was named on the substitute’s bench by Andre Villas-Boas ahead of the match. His absence would have caused a little concern initially and while Steven Caulker covered well in his place, AVB feels that Jan will be fit enough to return to the squad for next weekend’s FA Cup date with Leeds.

“We had an illness to Jan on the morning. He was going to play. We told Steven to be ready and Jan could not make it,” Andre said.

“He was on the list but we kept him away from the bench.”

AVB also praised the defence within the squad as a unit

“We have had great partnerships this season at the back and we are fortunate enough to be able to rotate and still have performances like we did so I am extremely happy,” he added.

AVB feels that Jan will be fit enough to return on Sunday but with strength in depth, maybe it’s wiser to rest the Belgian ahead of some important Premiership clashes?
