Spurs may be holding on the fourth place right now ahead of Everton and Arsenal but the less pessimistic of supporters are targeting third, where Chelsea sit just one point above us after their defeat to Newcastle at the weekend.

Any fans’ optimism is shared by the players and Jan Vertonghen is aiming as high as possible, rather than looking just to hold on to that final Champions League slot.

“We will be happy with fourth place but we’re only one point behind Chelsea, so we have to aim as high as possible,” Vertonghen said in the Evening Standard.

“We have a home game against Newcastle on Saturday, so why not? I’ve played against all the biggest teams in the League and we can beat anybody.”

Tottenham have some difficult fixtures coming up but if there is to be a battle for third then the key game sees us travel to Stamford Bridge on the 13th of April. However, if Chelsea maintain their current run of poor form then they may be out of the top four – as they were last season.

Spurs players have the belief but can we aim even higher and claim that third place at the end of the campaign?
