The left back place at Spurs has arguably been our only problem position this year and the lack of cover was highlighted by Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s extended lay off. In Benny’s absence, Jan Vertonghen, Kyle Naughton and even Gareth Bale were played out of position to cover for the Cameroon international.

Now it’s March and Benny is back but he doesn’t seem a regular first team choice for AVB. He’s struggled for form at times and there are suggestions that the club may move in the summer to line up a permanent replacement.

The name in the frame today is that of Feyenoord’s Bruno Martins Indi – a versatile defender who can play at left back or in the heart of defence. Martins Indi is 21 and already has seven full international caps to his name.

It’s thought that the player could be available in the summer for around £5.5m but is a left back essential or should BAE be trusted to regain his form and become a permanent fixture in the starting XI once again?

  1. Let’s hope spurs gets bruno. This will help the club. They could even look at a rotation system between. Assoua kotta and Bruno. Please don’t get rid of Assoua kota he is a brillant player and very composed on the ball.

  2. I don’t think we would’ve splashed out £3m on Fryers if he wasn’t going to be pushing for a first team place in the near future.

    • Just so.
BAE is a pretty decent full-back (provided you know more than what the MOTD pundits tell you). Danny Rose always impressed me at LB and has been mroe than worthy of a squad place from his performances at Sunderland. A knowledgeable United friend (there are ‘some’) tells me to ignore the hyperbole about Fryers not being that good, that United rated him very, very highly and that is why they are peeved at losing him to Spurs. On top of that, Naughton and Vertonghen can cover there.
Not that much of a problem area, really.

  3. There is no left back issue. Benni is number 1, naughton is number 2 both have played well this season and if required vertonghen slots in well at left back as he has done so often in Kyle and Benni’s absence. We have also just acquired Ezekiel Fryers for £3m a month ago. The decision to play vertonghen LB and bring in Caulker against west ham was a tactical move by AVB, one to add height and muscle to the back four against a very tall route 1 west ham side. BAE would have started were these not the circumstances. Also naughton has only this season signed a new contract a new lb signing would create four unhappy players and create a wealth of wasted wages out of levys pocket. Thus, there is no left back problem and I do not believe this player will be signed for spurs

  4. AVB rotates depending on opposition he only played JV against west ham due to their aerial threat. BAE will be first choice for most games but AVB rotates the defence according to the opponent.

  5. Bruno Martins Indi has played half a season as a centre back too, and offers international experience. Basically a Super Jan mk.2 in terms of what he can offer. Need another left sided centre back ideally, and he can provide rotation for LB and LCB. Same kind of target as Eliaquim Mangala, but more affordable as Feyenoord as not playing in Europe at all, and they’re in the Eredivisie. Mangala’s at one of Portugal big three. Should pinch Jordy Clasie from Feyenoord to in my opinion.

Bruno Martins Indi + Jordy Clasie ~ Mangala + Moutinho…roughly

  6. From a depth perspective LB is the least of our worries. At his best BAE is one of the best in the league. Zeki Fryars, Danny Rose, Kyle Naughton and Jan verthongen can play the position, too. Lets get a decent striker before spending Money where it’s not needed.

    • Reckon we should go in for Iago Aspas, or a Real Madrid striker (Benzema/Higuain) if we make CL and they manage to sign Edinson Cavani. Reckon a punt on Javier Hernandez wouldn’t be a bad shout at all, in fact he’d be my favourite to lead the line at the Lane.

  7. Buy him, hes more of a centre back who watches the ball, defends the goal and defends inside unlike Dawson, Caulker and Vertonghen and covers space really well just like our Ledley. The most similar player to King that i have to date seen

  8. Disco Benny is rhe man. He’s quality. Definitely our number 1. MOTD idiots just putting him down because he admitted playing for money. Quality geezer.

  9. If we make CL (please God) we should bust a gut to sign Leighton Baines & even offer BAE in part-ex, (would look like swapping Snoop-Dog for Ian Brown (thought Liam would do Baines disservice!)). But alternatively if SAF rates Fryers (he was furious when Zeki did a bunk) then the lad must be good, I’ve read Yoo fans wax lyrical about him -anyone seen Zeki out for the reserves???
