The ever crowded midfield at Tottenham leaves players such as Lewis Holtby and Gylfi Sigurdsson with a battle on their hands as far as starting places are concerned during the remainder of this campaign. In fact, the arrival of so many new faces in the transfer window suggests that both men may have to settle for permanent residence on the Premier League bench and possible starts in our Europa League matches this season.
But there’s been no whingeing from either player and Gylfi has today reiterated his desire to stay at the Lane and battle for his place.
“We’ve brought in a lot of players and we have a very big squad,” Sigurdsson is quoted as saying by Fotbolti.net.
“Many good players have arrived and things are looking good. We have a strong group of lads so hopefully we can go far in every competition.
“I know that most of the teams in the top five of the Premier League buy a lot of players, and I knew there would be plenty of competition.”
The Icelandic international went on to wish the departing Gareth Bale well but focussed on the legacy that he has left at Spurs.
“I hope he does well there, but we’ve got some players instead for the money he brought in so hopefully we can reach that Champions League spot,” he added.
It’s refreshing to see that type of attitude and at 23 Gylfi Sigurdsson has plenty of time to develop as a Spurs player but it does look as if he will have to be very patient for this season at least.
In Eriksen and Sigurdsson we have two gifted midfeilders (not wingers) that do what they are told without whinning. It would be god if fans would show the same loyalty.
