Vlad Chiriches made his debut for Spurs during last night’s Capital One Cup win over Aston Villa and the Romanian gives us another option in defence ahead of the autumn fixtures. Currently, Andre Villas-Boas has injury concerns over Younes Kaboul and Danny Rose but with Vlad in and Steven Caulker and William Gallas out, is there a need for another centre back at the Lane?

The man being touted for a switch is Swiss international and Basel defender Fabian Schar who stood out during his side’s unexpected 2-1 victory over Chelsea last week. Schar is just 21 but has been an important figure at the heart of Basel’s defence since joining up at the start of last season as he helped his side to a fourth consecutive domestic title.

The player has also won three full international caps and has a notable record of three goals in that time. Schar netted both in Switzerland’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Norway earlier this month.

Scoring goals isn’t his main job of course but those strikes would have increased his profile and it’s also claimed that Arsenal and Borussia Monchengladbach are sizing up a January bid. Taking all the stats into account, Fabian Schar looks a real prospect but is there room for him at White Hart Lane?

  1. I assume hes a CB as no mention of position. But as above, pretty much a dead issue really, especially at centre half where were particularly strong. I think (as I guess most people would) if we need any cover, its good ol’ LB and still more quality up front, but that may be a bit harsh,. If Lamela keeps intergrating nicely and Townsend can put his slavering tongue away and make some intelligent decsions in the final 3rd and Ade sorts his life out, suddenly we look mustard all over. Good times! COYS.

  2. Not that I want it to happen as I have always been a big fan of Kaboul (even during his firt stint), but it may be that the failure of the club to tie him to a long term contract, despite his present one running down, and his long-term injury problems may not be unrelaated. In which case, yeah, we probably will need another one.
