Lewis Holtby has been talked about time and time again on here and on other websites but the German seems determined to take advantage of the chances he’s being given at Spurs this season.

After helping to finally unlock Cardiff’s defence in second half injury time, the midfielder provided three direct assists in Tottenham’s 4-0 victory at Villa Park in the Capital One Cup and must surely be in AVB’s thoughts for a starting slot in Saturday’s London Derby.

Holtby himself realises that this current Spurs squad is an immensely strong one and he believes it has all the qualities needed to challenge on four fronts during this campaign.

“Silverware is silverware. There’s four cups to play for and you want to win all of them,” said Lewis.

“If you want to go to the top as a professional footballer you try to win every game and you try to win every trophy.

“That’s what we are trying to do and we just have to work like we have as a team the last couple of weeks.

“We have a big chance of winning something but it is a very long season.”

Spurs have great strength in depth right now but whether they can fight on all fronts over a long season is doubtful. As for Lewis Holtby, if he does come in to Saturday’s side then the man under most pressure could be Gylfi Sigurdsson with Andros Townsend a possible alternative.

Dropping to the bench would be tough on the Icelander but Holtby’s claims are getting harder to ignore.

  1. Drop Townsend, he is bench warm stuff at best but I would also want Sandro in the team and Kaboul …

    Lloris
    Walker, Kaboul, JV Vlad C
    Holtby
    Lamela Sandro Paulihno Erkisen
    Soldado

  2. Holtby is playing in a different position to Sigurdsson and Townsend. Holtby plays in the number 10 position whereas Sigurdsson has been playing on left midfield and Townsend on the right for Spurs. It would be a waste to play Holtby on the right or left when he is so effective behind the striker.

It may be worth trying Eriksen at some stage on the right or left, or play Holtby in central midfield behind Eriksen because it would be great if both players were in the same team. Otherwise just alternate Eriksen and Holtby according to the game.

  3. The trouble is Holtby’s excelled for Spurs in the No.10 role, pushing forward and looking for passes to break through a defence. When he was played on the wings (as Siggy has been willing to be) he’s not been that great. So if you want Holtby then you drop Eriksen. That’s an incredibly hard call to make as both have been excellent in their minutes on the pitch. My view is that Holtby is slightly stronger on the ball and more incisive with his passing, Eriksen is better though at drawing players out of position and creating space. I then trust AVB to know which is the better tactic to take against which team and I’m very thankful for a brilliant transfer policy that means Spurs A and Spurs B are both better than most teams in the Premier league!

    • Spurs A
Lloris, Walker, Verts, Daws, Rose, Dembele, Paulinho, Townsend, Eriksen, Chadli, Soldado

      Spurs B
Friedel, Naughton, Chriches, Kaboul, Fryers, Sandro, Capoue, Lamela, Holtby, Lennon, Defoe

Adebayor, Sigurdsson, Gomes and Kane cant even get in our reserve side, shows just how ridiculous our reserve squad is

      • lol.. i wonder if you understand how stupid your post is.

Sigurdsson not getting in the reserve side ???

Are you talking about the Sigurdsson that has scored half of Spurs Prem goals this season?

        twat 😉

  4. This is a big selection dilemma for AVB, the team defo doesnt pick itself, he has the issue of who to play at LB, Fryers, Naughton or Vertonghen, id go for the latter and play Kaboul central

    wide right Townsend v Lamela
    Central Dembele v Sandro
    Up top Defoe v Soldado
Wide left Chadli v Sig v Holtby

    My team would be
    Lloris
    Walker Kaboul Dawson Vertonghen
    Sandro Paulinho
    Lamela Eriksen Holtby
    Soldado

Friedel, Chriches, Dembele, Chadli, Townsend, Sig, Defoe

  5. Love the two teams idea, I had a chat with a Villa fan today who made the excuse that they’d made 8 changes..yep so did we. Holtby on the left though I’m not a believer in that one. It reminds me of when England used to think that Gerrard and Lampard both had to play but still played 442 so they stuck Gerrard on the left. No egos hurt, a definite hard worker in the team but no real overall shape and genuine left wingers felt completely overlooked…although that was Stuart Downing!

  6. I like Holtby but no one should be dropped from a winning premier team, with rose getting his place back if fit.

Holtby has done well against inferior teams in the cups, same as defoe but I would not start them in such a big match.

  7. THE MAN THAT IS EXPENDABLE IS DEMBELE.ON THE SPURS WEB HES RATED AS A STRIKER.THIS IS INCORRECT.ALSO HE SEEMS TO GO OFF THE PITCH BEFORE THE END OF THE GAME.INJURED OR TIRED.HOLTBY HAS MORE TO OFFER IN EVERY DEPARTMENT INCLUDING MAKEING GOALS.ITS A NO CONTEST BETWEEN THE TWO.IT HAS TO BE HOLTBY.

  8. I think for mre the key is who will be fit! With Rose we have some balance on the left, with Naughton we don’t! Assuming Rose isn’t ready I would go for this line-up!
    Lloris
    Walker–Kaboul–Dawson–Vertonghen
    Sandro——–Paulinho
    Lamela——–Eriksen——Townsend
    Soldado

subs friedel, chiriches, naughton, holtby, chadli, defoe
We are solid from 1-11, have options on the bench and hopefully Townsend can get more crosses in, like Lamela, for Soldado to put away. COYS
