At the time of writing there have been no new injury updates but it’s worth keeping in mind AVB’s words prior to the FC Sheriff game. Reporting on Sandro, Danny Rose, Zeki Fryers and Nacer Chadli, Villas-Boas said,

“He (Sandro) was substituted with some pain in his hamstring, so we’ve left him out of this game,” reported Andre Villas-Boas after training on Wednesday.

“Danny and Zeki have been making progress and Nacer is already back to a 50 per cent run, so we hope to see him available for selection for the City game.”

Expect to see the same back five that started the game against Everton with Roberto Soldado returning up front. However, Thursday night’s game leaves huge questions in the middle of the park. The displays from Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen will put huge pressure on Aaron Lennon and Lewis Holtby respectively while Etienne Capoue seems ready to come back if Sandro doesn’t make it.

Once again this is more about what we’d like to see than what we think will actually happen but what’s your view?

  1. I would drop Eriksen for Lennon to pull space for Lamela behind Soldado as he showed in the midweek match he is as good or better in the middle as he is wide . Lennon being wide will keep the Newcastle fullbacks busy and the same with Townsend and with Lamela and Soldado all crosses to the box should be low as neither of our guys will outjump the Newcastle centhalfs . Be bold and try this and it might just work . Lamela can act like a deep number ten a bit like Roma do and it works great . It would let him run at the Newcastle back four also creating space for everyone else . Lamela i think is by far our quickest thinking player and has the best close control so he will also see the runs of Soldado and others and there is a better chance he will make that pass than others we have . My team is as yours with that one change .

  2. A fairly good side except I am unsure about Eriksen. Would not mind seeing another striker for a change ie Defoe instead. Have been a supporter for over 70 years so I have seen plenty of good Spurs teams.

    • Have you found time in those 70 years to actually watch Defoe against a good team? Im not the only one with this opinion for a reason.

  3. In an ideal world i would have Kaboul in for Dawson but he played 90 minutes the other night.

Thats the team for me as published if Sandro is not fit.

  4. 433(this won’t happen)

I know eriksen has had a few off games but I used to watch a lot of Dutch leuge and he was amence, yes the leuge is different but he ran riot in champs leuge too! He’s playin in a different position at spurs to Ajax he played on the left of the midfield 3!! With him and paulinho/holtby feeding the front 3 with capoue/sandro/dembele holding I think could work!!

  5. Also I think dembele is a great player but seems to hold ball for too long and maybe counterproductive to the runs soldado makes and also ultilising the pace of lamela/Lennon/Townsend and even the full backs!!

  6. Erikson, Paulinho, and Lamela were very deadly combo soon as Erikson came off the front attackers became totally inept …..this combo needs a few games to gel then add Soldado , now we are cooking

  7. in AVB we trust..
    my thoughts is about 4-1-4-1
    Kyle Daws Vlado Jan..
    Andros Lamela Paulinho Gylfi..
Lets support the RS9, press them high, and put Lamela near to Andros speed and dribble.. Gylfi very crusial player.. Paulinho near to Moussa when they past our front pressure.. Hugooooooooooo COYS and COME ON YOU SPURSSSSS

  8. I pretty much agree but Paulinho has been played too much and shouldn’t start…
    For me: 4-3-3
    ————— Capoue—————–
    ——- Dembele——Eriksen———-

  9. —————–Lloris;
    Walker, Dawson, Kaboul, Vertonghen
    ———Capoue, Dembele
    ——Lennon, Lamela, Townsend

  10. Everyone is seeing it now.
    Lamela must play #10

    Walker Dawson Kaboul Vertongen
    CaPOW! Paulinhio
    Lennon – Lamela – Townsend

    or to a 442
    Walker Dawson Kaboul Vertongen
    Lennon CaPOW Holtby Townsend
    Lamela – Soldado
(After just a few weeks these two will be better than SAS at The Pool)
