As the TV rolled on into the night, reports of Jermain Defoe heading to the MLS started to dominate the feeds with suggestions that the deal would be announced on Monday. The rumour started several weeks ago but with the transfer window heading into its second week, JD’s move to Toronto is set to rubber stamped – according to the press.

There is a twist to the tale with claims that the striker would remain at Spurs until the MLS season starts again in March. That would answer any immediate issues with regards to a lack of cover up front but if there are no new arrivals this month, we could be very light in the run in.

Defoe would leave as the club’s all time leading scorer in European competition and the fifth highest overall but at 31 and with 18 months left on his contract, Spurs look to have cashed in with a fee in the region of £6m.

It may make sense to let him go at this stage in his career but will there be trouble ahead if Jermain Defoe isn’t replaced by an incoming striker during this transfer window?

  1. Good servant to the club but ultimately much to one dimensional in today’s game.

The loan deal makes sense, his world cup chances would have been impacted but surprised he’s not pushed for a move to a mid table or lower prem team.

    Good luck to him.
