Two factors have combined to shorten Louis van Gaal’s odds to become the next Spurs manager. Firstly, the man himself dropped another, less than subtle hint at the weekend and that coincided perfectly with Tottenham’s dismal display at Carrow Road.
Speaking in the Guardian, van Gaal said,
“I will definitely not be in charge (of the Netherlands) for the Euro 2016 qualification campaign. I don’t know where I will go next.
“Normally I go with my pension and go to live in Portugal, but maybe there will come a new challenge.
“I have said before that a challenge should be a club in the Premier League. That’s a challenge.
“Maybe Tottenham are coming but, first, we have to go to Brazil.”
The 62 year old reiterated his desire to work in England but went on to suggest that Spurs may not necessarily be his final destination.
“I am mostly interested in England because I have been a coach in Spain, Germany, in the Netherlands, so I think England is the next step in my career,” he added.
“It could be another club, it depends on the vacancies because Spurs were already in touch with me.
“I prefer to be focused on this World Cup and now there’s another coach, so as a coach you cannot say ‘I go to that club or that club’, it depends on circumstances.”
Louis van Gaal is now as short as 2/1 in some places to become the next Spurs boss while Tim Sherwood is priced at 16/1 in the Sack Race betting. It’s looking more likely that Sherwood is the interim coach with a replacement coming after the World Cup and while we could all be wrong, those two sets of figures seem to back up that theory with Spurs limping through to the end of the campaign under the current regime.
I can’t wait to see him become the next Spurs manager. One can be sure he will clean up the mess of the last two years; he will make unprofessional players cry for their mothers or get rid of them. He will try to play (realistic) attractive football. He is one of the few managers on earth who will say “f*** **f” to Levy and Baldini and he will be a lot of fun at press conferences:-). Van Gaal and Mourinho at one table, the dream of every journalist.
