Hindsight is always 20/20 but many Spurs supporters will have noted that Saturday’s poor defensive display against Chelsea came just a few hours after a Steven Caulker inspired Cardiff took three points from fellow strugglers Fulham.

Caulker left the club at the beginning of the season and to be fair, a fair proportion of fans were surprised by the move. Vlad Chirches was being lined up but with an infirm Younes Kaboul in the ranks, the 22 year old is likely to have featured quite extensively. He would certainly be in the frame for Sunday’s North London Derby considering we have only four fit and available defenders and while that’s an extreme situation, the player would have claimed more than his 18 appearances in 2012-13.

After the game, Caulker received predictable praise from his current manager.

“When he comes to Cardiff, he knows he’s going to be fighting for survival and that’s a big ask because he could have had an easy life being at Spurs probably,” said Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.

“He took on a great test and he’s maturing all the time and it’s great to see.

“The lad is 22 years of age, he is a leader, he’s very talented and he’s had a testing season.”

While scoring isn’t his job, the centre half chips in with some important strikes and Saturday’s double took his tally to four for the season.

“He’s first and foremost a defender, and Steven defended fantastically today. He’ll chip in with goals, we are a threat at set-pieces and I think teams know that.”

Cardiff may have won but they remain among the favourites to go down at the end of the season. If that happens, expect Liverpool to come in with an offer amidst doubts over Daniel Agger but with the admitted benefit of hindsight, Spurs could do worse than to welcome Steven Caulker back.

  1. Lets hope so? He is what we need exactly!!! A leader on the pitch. Tim would be a good technical director as certainly seems passionate about spurs. Ldv to be manager and knock sense into their shower of sh-t performances for us fans. Vert, paulinho are culprits and need sorting.
