If certain members of Tottenham’s side were playing for their futures then it was hard to tell in last night’s poor showing against the Portuguese Champions elect. We said ahead of the game that we needed a win with a clean sheet against a side unbeaten since November but the tie is effectively over after the 3-1 defeat.

One moment of brilliance came from Christian Eriksen’s free kick but it did little to mask the overall display.

“I thought we were fine in the first half, it was exactly what I wanted,” said Tim Sherwood after the match.

“We showed good spirit, character and we were solid defensively but their first shot at goal ended up in our net and that was a body blow.

“To then concede two set-pieces in the second half was really disappointing.”

At least Sherwood was being honest when he assessed our chances ahead of the second leg.

“We’ll go to Benfica and give it our all and we owe it to the fans to do that,” he added.

“We’ll have a good following over there and we’ll play with spirit and give it everything we’ve got, but obviously it’s a tall order.”

That game comes along in a week’s time but before that is a North London derby that suddenly, many of us are dreading.

  1. our only hope is to get that idiot out & get hoddle in just until the end of the season…..

there were so many negatives from last night i don`t know where to begin

kane looked totally out of his depth against a top european side – shamefully to start him (only his 2nd ever start) in such an important game over soldado (who scored in his last outing!) and townsend

how have we spent 100m+ in the last year and been left with 2 left backs at the club who are league 1 standard?

is it my imagination or our players really slow or just unfit?..most top sides break quickly from the back & by the time the ball goes into the box they have 3 or 4 forwards in there…we seem to have maybe one or 2 (and on occasions resort to pumping high balls into ade hoping for the best) – same going the other way, when the opposition breaks quickly we can`t seen to get enough players back to defend our own penalty area.

  2. Got to say what a great side benfica are but as good as they were we were as bad naughton and kane are so far out of there depth its a joke and paulinho looks like he dont want to be there.

Cant take nothing from last nights game at all we need a major change next season but we all know what levy is like so dont expect to much.
