Only Spurs could have you throwing the remote at the TV for 75 minutes before seducing you with false hope for the next fifteen and then leaving you a discarded and emotionally bereft husk on the final whistle.
We didn’t really deserve to go through but we were one disputed penalty claim from taking the tie with Benfica to extra time and while it’s been a dismal few weeks, there were just a couple of highlights.
It’s easy for managers to say they’re taking positives from a defeat but the claims this time would be genuine. Firstly there was Nacer Chadli, who epitomised the whole team performance – quiet for most of it before suddenly coming alive. His future at White Hart Lane may still be open to conjecture but here is a winger who can cut in and hit the target in a way that Andros Townsend can rarely manage: I would comfortably keep the Belgian at the club and move Townsend on.
Then we had two assists from Harry Kane: We’ve seen links to Burnley’s Danny Ings but I’d prefer Kane to be given a real chance to establish himself as third striker. Finally, the whole pace and energy of the tie changed when Christian Eriksen came on and if the Dane is left on the bench this Sunday then there are serious issues with the coach’s judgement – assuming Eriksen is fit of course.
So overall it was a terrible night with the odd exception and I think I may have even seen Nabil Bentaleb play a forward pass…
