While the press are switching their focus between Tim Sherwood and Louis van Gaal, the one player under the spotlight is our central defender Jan Vertonghen. The Belgian international has been conspicuous on the pitch thanks to his body language while his comments about his future gave little for fans to be positive about.

Back in February, the Express claim Jan was ‘stammering’ as he answered their question as to whether he would stay at the club if they finished outside of the Champions League places.

“Those are always difficult questions,” he said. “I have made no complaints about that. Let’s see after the end of the season and after the World Cup.”

After that, Vertonghen seemed to retract a little suggesting that he would be part of Tottenham’s future but it’s the perceived lack of interest on the pitch that leads to doubt. With injury likely to put an end to his season, it’s being suggested that the defender has played his last game for the club.

Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay is now being touted as a possible replacement but ignoring Monday night’s howler against Sunderland, our own Vlad Chiriches is surely ready to take over. A fit and interested Jan Vertonghen would be our best option for 2014-15 but if the Belgian is on his way, Vlad seems best placed to step in and by all accounts, the Romanian can also switch to left back if required.

What’s your opinion on Vertonghen? Would you like to see him stay and if not, who should the club bring in?

  1. Get a decent manager and a structure in place. Get Levy to back the new manager and give him time to implement his ideas. Get Alderwierld, his old defensive partner from Ajax who isn’t in the starting XI at Athletico Madrid, and I reckon Vertonghen will stay

      • So you’re obviously part of the pro Sherwood ‘pack’ or are you simply the only one?
His record is no better or worse than AVB and I would’ve liked him to stay. You’ve watched games – can you see that we’re improving or is it just that the quality that we have is, most of the time, just about getting us through these games, I feel it’s the latter.

If you honestly believe that he will take the club to where it wants to be then fine. I don’t, certainly not yet anyway. That’s not to say he couldn’t become a very good manager but I don’t really want Spurs to be a testing ground for inexperienced managers.
I don’t dislike the man, as seen by some of the hatred on some blogs, but I want someone who will command the respect of our players and be able to attract better players when transfer windows come around.
I don’t believe that is Sherwood.

Re: Vertonghen, He probably came in with promises that Harry Redknapp would take the team forward – Harry Sacked. That AVB would organise the team and get us Champions League football – AVB sacked. That our best players would remain and take us forward – Bale sold. A new, experienced, well respected manager might go some way to convincing him that his future lies here, if not then let him go and give the new man the funds to buy his own players

  2. If the man wants to go i will let him go. I say it useless to stop him. Get a good price say 50 mill and say good luck to him. His form of late is not that of that at the begining of the league. But one thing I beg spend the money wisely.
No player is bigger than the club I say.

  3. I would like Verts to stay, he can play in more than one position. Sherwood has to step down, he’s been too disrespectful of old and new at the Lane. We need to sign Loic Remy to add fire power and pace to the strikeforce, also a left-back who’s not moody and has pace. The future looks bright I think.

  4. Vertonghen is a quality footballer who gives the impression he has no interest in playing football. His body language is terrible and unfortunately when one player gets his head down it spreads like a cancer.

    • Whar use is quality if your not prepared to use it?He and anybody else who@s not prepared to give at least 100% for Spurs can go with him.Strangely, hint of sarcasm there,we’ve started to look more like a team since he’s on the bullet list.

  5. Enough is enough , we cannot keep letting good players leave no matter the prize , there is enough lessons . MODRIC , BALE. look what happened this year COYS

  6. Vertonghen? We don’t want him at White Heart Lane he had made too any game costing errors to be so talkative.
The sooner we can get rid of that moron the better.

  7. I am tired of this situation where we try to dissuade players from leaving. TBH, if I was a Spurs player and had been through our last season, I would certainly consider ANY good offer to move on …… Players who want to go go, but at OUR price, and the process by which they leave is then thought out in advance with adequate notice of the necessary changes. This means having a properly functioning Academy and a Director of football who is on the ball and in unity with the coach ……. When we sold Bale, our choice of players wasn’t as disastrous as it seems; what was was the attempt to shoehorn so many changes into the team at once. If we had bought a good striker and a proper replacement for Luka, we would have moved on more successfully, but only if these purchases were made with the full consent of the coach and entirely in line with the tactical planning he had established. If this had happened we would not have been changing manager twice within a year.

  8. I wanna keep vert, he came to us because he saw potential and got stuck with Sherwood a guy that has the potential to ruin any club.
What I would do is a straight swap for lakaku as this is the only way we are gonna get him. I would also buy Hernandez and Ashley young, we know what we get with both of them and we should be able to get them at a fraction of the price as Manu will look to buy other players putting these 2 down the pecking order. Young works hard and he does a solid job on the left

    My team for next season

    ………………………….lloris……………………….

    Walker………..kab…………chir…………..ekotto

    ………………………Dembele……………………….

  9. Subs
    Caulker,contreao,holtby,ade,Hernandez,sandro,townsend.

    Sell Lennon,naughton,rose,siggy,capoue,

Townsend is the new Arjen Robben trust me he will make a name for himself at the World Cup.

    • Townsend? Two words come to mind immediately. Predictable and selfish.
If we are talking football honestly, that puts a line through his name for England… and certainly for Spurs.

  10. apart from bill nick and dare i say harry rednap all the rest of a verry long line of chancers and tossers some x players som of who were more out of there depth than tim who is doing his best with a load of dross he didnt aqure whats the answer bring in another foriener

  11. You don’t become captain of your country if you are rubbish. He is a great player and was unlucky against Sunderland. He has had trouble with injuries and adjusting to a new league. He will come good for spurs.

  12. Lose Vertonghen and the club loses its best player. It’s up to the manager to get the player enjoying their football and playing at their best. And Sherwood hasn’t done that, up until the end of AVB’s reign, Vertonghen was having a great season. A new manager with more experience can sort him out but how we can even consider wanting to sell this class act is beyond me, he’s our only player that could walk straight into Man City’s first 11 and so we CANNOT lose him, even if he wants to leave, we have to make a stand and not have another Bale situation on our hands.

  13. VERTONGHEN WANTS AWAY WE SOLD BETTER PLAYERS THAN HIM ALL BECAUSE THEY WANTED AWAY NO USE A PLAYER IN THE DRESSING ROOM MUCKING ABOUT WITH OTHER PLAYERS HEADS , SELL ROSE , NAUGHTON , SIGURDSSON , DAWSON , TOWNSEND , LENNON , SOLDADO , CAPUE , FRYERS , CHALDI , AND ANY OTHER NEW SIGNING FAILURES , START FRESH FOR THE NEW SEASON STOP LEAVING TRANSFERS TO LATE DISPITE BARGIN DEALS AT THE CLOSE OF THE WINDOW , ITS A NEW ERA AT WHL WITH THE NEW STADIUM VENTURE I HOPE WORK YOUR SOCKS OFF LEVY TO REPLACE THESE PLAYERS THAT MUST GO GET SHOT OF THAT GLOBE TROTTING LIVING ON ROOM SERVICE BALDINI LEWIS SELL SPURS TO A REAL BILLIONAIRE IE BILL GATES OR AN OIL SHEIK .

  14. I would keep Vertonghen if the player wished to stay. But I would sell him if his head is elsewhere. I prefer to select from players who have their heads for the club.
