Tim Sherwood may have overseen his last game as Tottenham’s Head Coach but if he is sacked before the start of the next campaign, the former midfielder will depart with his reputation intact. At least, that’s his view as told to reporters after yesterday’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa.
“I’ve got a 59 per cent win ratio in the Premier League and I think if I had started the season in charge we’d be in the Champions League.”
“We’d scored 15 when I took the job and we’ve scored 40 goals since then. It will be interesting to see how I’ve been judged and what I’ve been judged on.
Sherwood also commented on the match in question and was delighted with the fast start that killed the game off before half time.
“We’ve been criticised over the season for starting slowly but I didn’t think that was the case today, we could have been three up by the time we scored the first and once Paulinho scored, it was comfortable for us,” Tim said on the club’s official website.
“I was delighted with the players’ application and it was game-over by half-time.”
So if Sherwood leaves he will, as far as he is concerned, do so with his head held high. He believes that Champions League football would have been captured had he started the season but as it is, yesterday’s victory confirms a slot in the Europa League once again.
Yesterday’s game was a bore to be completely honest and the atmosphere in the ground was pretty subdued (apart from the funny Villa fan songs), probably because like me, many Spurs fans wanted the season over and done with. I supported Tim at first, but he’s clearly limited and whilst it was great to see the younger players get a run-out, we desperately need an experienced manager to get the most out of our senior players, or why even bother to have them on the books??
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Levy acts quickly to get the new man in before the World Cup and that any major signings/departures are done before we get to August!!! How many more windows are we going to have to endure with last-minute speculation?? Look at City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal – their squads are always pretty much in place before the season starts, whilst we’re always trying to finish our puzzle at the last minute!!
Yes Frank de Boer would be good, but my vote would be to go all out for Benitez, who has won trophies in England with both Liverpool and Chelsea and knows how to coach and manage senior players to their full potential. Get Rafa in, sort out the futures of Lloris and Vertonghen right away and then offload those surplus to requirements. I’d show the door to Rose, Kaboul, Naughton, Lennon, bring back Caulker and buy an experienced LB at last!! With BAE, Holtby and Carroll back from their loans we will have plenty of depth and a real chance in the Europa League, which represents a second avenue to CL qualification. Benitez has won it twice, so who better to help us get some silverware on the table??
Sherwood should not be happy with his contribution at all. No gameplan, an irrational dislike of defensive midfielders a devisive character who has disillusioned key players, and been an embarrassment to the club in press conferences and interviews. I am no fan of AVB but think we would have been 4th or 5th if he had remained in charge. When he was sacked in December we were 5 points behind City, we finished 17 points adrift.
Time to get behind a manager for the long-term, pick the right man and give them 5 years to deliver. But please, please, not Benitez.
The new manager will be De Boer. Get your money on now.
Tim did a good job in charge.
He inherited a team which had scored 15 league goals in 16 games, a squad of new faces and a shoot from outside, slide rule pass squad mentality.
Spurs are not a club which you can ‘learn on the job’, we expect more than that so a new manager is incoming.
