After a mixed opening to the 2014-15 season, Champions League football may seem a remote possibility for some supporters but Tottenham’s Argentinian winger Erik Lamela believes the club have a chance.

In a wide ranging interview with the Evening Standard, our record signing also touched on the arrival of compatriot Maurico Pochettino as he looked ahead to the remainder of the campaign.

“Can we qualify? We hope so,” Lamela said. “There is still a lot of time left in the season.

“It’s very good with Mauricio Pochettino,” he added. “I feel a lot better than I did last season because I’m playing, I’m not injured and that makes things easier. It helps when you can train regularly with the team and adapt to your new position.”

One way of getting into the Champions League is via the Europa League with the winners guaranteed a slot in Europe’s elite competition. Lamela started the campaign brightly and may feature against Asteras on Thursday but is there any expectation of a top four finish, bearing in mind the form of some of our rivals, or is it all based on pure hope?
