After a nervy final 20 minutes, Harry Kane grabbed a third goal for Tottenham in stoppage time to wrap up a 3-1 win for the hosts.
Mousa Dembele opened the scoring for Spurs inside three minutes before Dele Alli made it 2-0 just before half time.
Jordan Ayew got a goal back for Villa and the visitors looked more likely to score the next goal in the final stages of the game.
But Harry Kane stepped up and finished brilliantly at the death to make it 3-1. Here’s how Twitter reacted to the goal and Tottenham’s performance.
Unbelievable team goal from start to finish? pic.twitter.com/ueHJVhCg7Q

Class from Lamela; brilliant last 10 from him. Just when we needed someone to be calm & put their foot on the ball he really stepped up.

Not the greatest performance by any means but three very good, ruthless goals – especially the last. Lamela MOTM for me. On to Anderlecht.

Beautiful 12 pass move, that Kane goal. Davies' calmness on the ball particularly lovely. #COYS!

More points on the board. Climbing the table again and a plus ten goal difference. I cannot remember ever seeing it that high ? #thfc #COYS

The improvement in Walker and Rose shouldn't be understated. The coaching team doing a great job.

Nice to see us show a bit of maturity and savvy after conceding. The Spurs of old would have panicked & finished that game 2-2.

Harry Kane took the net off with his goal. Delighted! #COYS

Hands up, how many of you would have chased Lamela away from the Lane? He is a true class act. Some of his skill on the ball is astonishing

That third goal was brilliant. From Hugo passing it out, to Kane finishing without Villa players getting a touch in between. A team goal.

From the 75th minute to the 85th minute was one of the worst passages of play I've seen from Spurs. Why couldn't we keep the fucking ball?!
