At the start of the season Kyle Walker and Danny Rose were very well established as Tottenham’s strongest full-back pairing.

Rose was brilliant in the previous campaign, as he seemingly took inspiration from the club’s signing of Ben Davies to take his game to another level. Davies meanwhile, struggled to adapt to his new surroundings and looked a shadow of the impressive player he was at Swansea.

Walker was beset by injuries in 2014-15 but with no other specialist right-back in the squad, was a guaranteed starter when fit. Keiran Trippier was signed in the summer but had to initially make do with appearances in cup competitions, as Walker kept his place in the Premier League.

Yet as the season has wore on, so Trippier and Davies’ form has improved. Both started against Watford on Saturday and impressed. The full-back positions are incredibly important in Pochettino’s system and he now seems rotating on a game-to-game basis.

Sunday’s game against Manchester City might offer a clue as to which duo he now considers to be his strongest pairing. With a full week to prepare for the crucial match, fatigue will not be an issue when Pochettino makes his decision.

Should he go for the pace and drive that Walker and Rose bring to the team? Or would we be better off with the more measured Davies and the crossing ability of Trippier?

Let us know who you’d pick in the comments box below. Whatever the verdict, the good news is that after years of putting up with some frankly atrocious full-backs, no Premier League side has more strength in depth in this position.

  1. This is a very good question, which I am sure many Spurs fans are asking themselves, myself included. Right now, I would go with Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier as our two best full-backs, although Ben Davies has really been coming into a rich vein of form recently, so it is almost impossible to separate those two (Rose & Davies). Trippier is more dangerous in attack than Kyle Walker, on account of the fact he is a much better crosser of the ball. It remains to be seen defensively if Trippier is prone to the kind of brain cramp that we see periodically from Kyle, but as yet no evidence of it! Either way we have 4 excellent young full backs who are readily interchangeable and that is a great way to keep all four of them fresh as we approach the ‘business end’ of the season.

  2. We are lucky to have Four full backs all quite close in ability .No one is a shoe in which keeps them on their toes.
We don’t have the best two full backs,we have the best four!

    • I think that’s the answer. It is kinda a moot point as Poch’s system requires two very good full-backs for each position as, barring injuries, it is the most rotated position in the squad due to the high energy demands placed upon the role.

  3. I personally think none of the full backs are better than the other, they all offer different strengths that make them a better choice depending on the opponents.

For example, I think Ben Davies has better touches, crosses, and positioning at left back, but Danny Rose has more speed, strength, aerial defensive ability, and posssibly attacking threat.

It is kind of similar for Trippier vs Walker. I think Walker has more speed, strength and aerial defensive ability. Trippier offers excellent touches, passing, and crosses going forward.

Poch. has done an excellent job rotating the full backs depending on the opponents being played
