If you saw Eric Dier mucking about with Dele Alli (who else) on Periscope earlier today, you might have wondered why he wan’t on a flight to Dortmund with the rest of the Spurs squad.

While Alli is suspended for the Europa League clash, Dier was fit to play but is being left behind in London to rest ahead of Sunday’s match with Aston Villa.

Dier has played more games than anyone this season and while he’s long been due a rest, perhaps it would have made more sense against a side as poor as Villa, rather than a team as potent as Borussia Dortmund.

It also begs the question as to who is best equipped to replace him. Nabil Bentaleb and Mousa Dembele have both played in a more defensive midfield role at times this season. Which one would you trust to ward off Dortmund?

  1. Can’t agree with this article’s comment … “perhaps it would have made more sense against a side as poor as Villa, rather than a team as potent as Borussia Dortmund.”. The Premier League is FAR MORE IMPORTANT for Spurs than the Europa league. We need a top 4 spot in the PL. Spurs can’t afford any slip ups with up to 7 teams with a chance of a top 4 spot. Spurs need to field their best team for EVERY PL game and that includes Villa!! The Europa League can go to Hell as far as I’m concerned; I’m sure many Spurs fans would agree with my comments.
