Tottenham surrendered an early lead at White Hart Lane, going on to lose 2-1 to Southampton and potentially allowing Arsenal to sneak into second place by the season’s end.
The good news is: if Manchester City beat Arsenal, Spurs effectively secure second place.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side could have made it easy for themselves with a win today, but a strong Saints outfit were deserving winners in the end. Steven Davis scored twice in reply to Heung-Min Son’s early opener.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the result.
Ronald Koeman has won the tactical battle. Simple as that. Not going to hang around for the moaners and groaners. Now for Newcastle. #COYS

Just going to put my mortgage on Arsenal winning…

Heads dropped and went down whimpering. Very disappointing. Big job next week potentially now

Warning signs were there today. As Tottenham move forward, one or two simply won't be able to cut it. 2nd far from secure now. #THFC

Southampton fully deserved that; we didn't show up today. It will hurt if we finish 3rd, but hey, still automatic CL qualification.

If you're feeling down about Spurs after today's poor performance, just read Levy and Pochettino's programme notes. You'll feel better.

Disappointing but those players were physically and emotionally drained after Monday. No real surprise.

Can't hide away from facts, last 3 games had the lead & ended up with just 2points out of them, shows the naivety of this young team.#THFC

We've lost 20 pts from winning positions this season. That's been our downfall this season & need to fix it to go one better next season.

Beat Arsenal please @MCFC

Some overreactions from several quarters about Spurs today. A 3rd-place finish is an over-achievement.

Struggled to deal with the disappointment of losing the lge and the pressure of retaining 2nd over AFC. Season overall.. progressive.

It just goes to show how little I know about football.I predicted that after our super performance at Stoke that we would win our next and last 4 games;well most probably we will not win any of them.Defeat at already relegated Newcastle next weekend(how about the winner coming from Townsend) looks probable.
Until MP realises that starting with Mason is as good as being down to10 men,we will never win any thing. Also Alli and Dembele for their stupid antics, should be deducted their wages; they have let the club down.
I agree with that! Alli and Dumbbelly should both be fined 4 weeks wages to go to charity!!! Dumbbelly has no excuse for eye-gouging Costa and if he misses the first 3-4 games of next season with a 6 match ban he should get those 4 weeks wages going to charity as well!! Pair of cnts!
