Reports from Spain claim that Spurs are ready to burst the bank to sign the Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.
The 21-year old has a £36m release clause and the Madrid-based paper AS have stated that Tottenham are ready to make him the highest paid player in the club’s history.
They claim that Spurs have told Saul that he could earn £6m a year after tax if he moves to White Hart Lane. That seems a huge salary to pay on top of a transfer fee that would also break records at Tottenham.
It’s most likely that this reported interest may be a bargaining ploy from Saul’s representatives as they look to secure a new contract from Atletico. He has become an important player for the club under Diego Simeone over the past couple of seasons and scored a vital goal in the Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich recently.
With Madrid having now reached the final of the Champions League in two of the last three seasons, it’s doubtful that Saul will look at move to Spurs as a step forwards in his career. This is one transfer that we’d love to happen but can’t envisage becoming a reality.
