Jan Vertonghen will be out for up to eight weeks after tearing ankle ligaments in training.
Initially thought to be sidelined for as long as four months, the fact that this proved to be an exaggeration is good news, but as Vertonghen will now miss the whole of pre-season, it could still be some time before we see him in a Spurs shirt.
Tottenham fans took the news on the chin, with most seeing this setback for Vertonghen as an opportunity for another Tottenham defender to stake a claim. Here’s how they reacted on Twitter.
Jan Vertonghen sat on the #BEL in a leg brace following his ankle injury earlier in the week. Heartbreak for him. pic.twitter.com/V8PnGLBMxO

Vertonghen has ligament damage. Will be out for six weeks. NOT four months as some had previously suggested. But his Euros are over #COYS

Real pity for Vertonghen but plus side is his body gets a good break. We've got Wimmer to step in seamlessly again. https://t.co/vyiMKGTHzd

Last time we were all worried about Vertonghen being injured, Wimmer stepped in and we barely noticed a difference. We'll be fine.

I think Wimmer will be stronger than Vertonghen. Very impressed last time with him.

*whispers*
I think Wimmer might be better than Vertonghen

Wimmer's just slowly walked into his shed at the bottom of his garden, shut the door …… & shouted YES YES YES HA HA HA! #Vertonghen

Yes, Spurs have Kevin Wimmer, and yes he’s already proven that he’s very good. It’s what’s behind HIM.

Even if Vertonghen is out for long, we should be fine.
This man is a more than suitable replacement. pic.twitter.com/ldOjLPyZl7
