Teen sensation Marcus Edwards gave Mauricio Pochettino something to think about yesterday, as he produced a brilliant performance for the U21 side.

Tottenham romped to a 4-1 victory over Reading and Edwards scored two great individual goals. The first in the 32nd minute saw him rifle home into the top corner with his right-foot from just inside the area.

Then in the 47th minute Edwards scored with his left, as he cut in from the right-wing and drilled a well-placed finish into the bottom corner.

If Edwards can continue to produce the goods like this, it can’t be long before Pochettino gives him an opportunity in the first-team. Watch the match highlights below.

  1. He’s been labelled as a star of the future for a very long time. I read a long time ago that Barca compiled a list of promising youngsters. Only two European based players made that list, one of those being our Marcus. The report had down as “a jewel in Europes crown”. That’s why it was such a relief to see him sign a 2 year deal recently. The kid is almost ready to be released into first team action now. Once he’s settled into the first team we’re pretty much set for the future with the nucleus of young players we’ll have. Kane, Dier, Alli, Edwards, Janssen and Lamela can take us forward for years. That’s without the likes of Carter-Vickers stepping up too.

    • I once read that Leigh Mills, John Bostock and Dean Parrett were some of the brightest stars in English football, and that Gardner and Thelwell were as good as King. I also recall Dim once said that Livermore reminded him of Iniesta, and many people stuck the Modric/Xavi label to Carroll because he could pass a ball 5 yards.
It would be great if Edwards lives up to the hype, but piling on the pressure of expectation has seen us burnt many times before.
