Since joining Tottenham at the beginning of last season, Toby Alderweireld has become a mainstay in Mauricio Pochettino’s side and is generally considered one of the best central defenders in Europe, if not the best.

There has always been a bit of uncertainty about his future, however, with a reported £25 million release clause provoking some concern among the supporters who are desperate for the Belgian to stay for the long term.

Well, there might be some good news on that front. The Mail reports Alderweireld is set to sign a new five-year deal with the club worth £75,000 a week, which would eradicate that pesky release clause.

Plenty of key players — including Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli — have signed new contracts with the club in recent months, but tying Alderweireld down for his best years might be the best deal of them all.

Certain European giants could almost certainly offer the defender more money, so it’s promising to see a player commit despite the fact he could earn more elsewhere.
