Tottenham and Arsenal are readying offers for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to The Daily Star.
The story cites a report from Spanish outlet Diario Gol, which claims Zinedine Zidane is keen to keep Kovacic at Real Madrid but five clubs are interested in signing him: Spurs, Arsenal, AC Milan, Roma and his former club, Inter Milan.
The 23-year-old is believed to prefer a move back to Italy, but Tottenham and the Gunners remain eager to bring him to England.
Last month, reports suggested Kovacic has a release clause of just £21.5 million at the Bernabeu, and Madrid are willing to listen to offers as low as £17.5 million.
Responding to rumours of a potential exit in May, Kovacic’s agent said: “Mateo has a very long contract with Real Madrid, which runs until 2021. So I do not understand all these rumours, all this speculation about his future.”
It will be difficult for Spurs to match the wages on offer from the Milan clubs, but it’s worth keeping an eye on this one.
