Crystal Palace are set to rival Tottenham for the signing of Ajax defender Joel Veltman, according to The London Evening Standard.
New Palace manager Frank de Boer managed Veltman as Ajax boss. Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld also played under De Boer for the Amsterdam club.
Veltman, who can play at centre-back and right-back, emerged as a Spurs target earlier this month. Mauricio Pochettino is keen to bring in a versatile defender and the 25-year-old fits the bill.
But it’s likely Palace could offer the Dutchman a regular place in the Eagles’ starting line-up, while he would probably be more of a squad player at Tottenham. Ajax are believed to value Veltman at around £10 million.
If Kyle Walker makes his expected move to Manchester City, Spurs will need a right-back to challenge Kieran Trippier for his place in the team. Veltman could potentially do that as well as fill in at centre-back when needed.
