Pau Lopez will remain with Espanyol this season but might be available for free next summer, according to reports in Spain.
Tottenham have been repeatedly linked with a permanent move for the Spanish goalkeeper, who spent last season on loan at White Hart Lane.
Lopez didn’t make a single senior appearances but featured on the substitutes’ bench a number of times.
It is believed the 22-year-old did enough to tempt Mauricio Pochettino into a permanent deal. Spurs apparently made a £2 million bid earlier in the summer, but that was knocked back.
Now, Spanish outlet AS claims Lopez will stay with Espanyol this season as backup to Diego Lopez.
It’s not all bad news, however. Lopez will apparently be available for free next summer, meaning there’s a good chance Tottenham will eventually get their man for absolutely nothing.
Failing to sign Lopez this summer isn’t the end of the world. Hugo Lloris is virtually impossible to displace, while Michel Vorm appears to be staying put.
