Pau Lopez will be allowed to leave Espanyol next week if he doesn’t sign a new contract with the La Liga club by Sunday, according to reports in Spain.
The goalkeeper spent last season on loan with Tottenham but didn’t make a single senior appearance. However, it believed he did enough to tempt Spurs in to making his loan move permanent.
Tottenham made a £2 million bid for Lopez earlier in the summer but it was turned down by Espanyol, who are believed to value the Spaniard at closer to £5 million.
The 22-year-old has just twelve months left on his current deal, and Spanish outlet Sport claims that he will be allowed to leave if he doesn’t put pen to paper on a new contract by Sunday.
Given his contract situation, I assume Spurs will continue to try and sign him on the cheap.
If he does join permanently, Lopez will have to endure another season of very little first-team action. He is seen more as a long-term replacement for captain Hugo Lloris.
