Tottenham have considered making a move for Everton defender Phil Jagielka this summer, according to The Daily Mail.

With the Premier League’s big clubs spending absurd fees to acquire their targets over the last few weeks, Spurs have apparently been monitoring cheaper alternatives.

The Mail claims 34-year-old Jagielka has been spoken of as defensive cover with Tottenham aiming to bolster their options at the back.

Spurs are expected to sign a right-back to provide competition for Kieran Trippier following the sale of Kyle Walker, although young full-back Kyle Walker-Peters has been tipped to challenge for a first-team spot.

It remains unclear whether Kevin Wimmer will still be with the club come the close of the transfer window. If he leaves, Tottenham are likely to target a new centre-back.

But Jagielka doesn’t fit Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy’s criteria of young players with potential to develop in terms of both ability and value. For me, The Mail’s claim is speculative at best.
